Is the 2.7 4X4 auto a "dog"?

I've driven my cousins 04 2.7 auto pre runner Xtra cab truck and it's got OK power, it's not a 4x4, but that shouldn't make to big a difference.

I have a 04 DC 4x4, 3.4 auto trans, with the extra weight of the DC i sorta want a SC, but that's just me, i used to own a 95.5 tacoma 5 lug with the 2.4 (the same as the 2.7 except the 2.7 is bored and stroked to make 15-20(?) more HP and torque) and i really liked the way it drove, i'd have to downshift to keep 55 on some hills, but once i got up in the power band (2700-3500 RPM) it'd hold the speed like a champ.

 

I have a 2013 Regular Cab 4x4 automatic, that I bought less than a month ago, and I agree with the others who have said the power is adequate. I was worried about the automatic at first because I had read that it was slow, but I think it's just fine, and it's a lot of fun to drive.

I have not had much trouble passing either on the street or on the interstate when I needed to.

I came from a 2005 Honda Accord V6 coupe that would throw you back in your seat when you stomped the gas petal, but I was not disapointed when I got the truck. It's not nearly as fast as the Accord, but it runs along really well.

Plus, I get to tow up to 3500 pounds with my new Tacoma. I would never be able to do that with the Accord. .

I had a 2001 Mazda B3000 3.0 V6 with a 5-speed manual and my new 2013 Tacoma 2.7 4cyl auto has more power and torque. Both are regular cabs and the Tacoma outperforms the Mazda any day. Its definitely not the power of the 4.0 but it's not a dog in anyway.

 

I had the 2012 RC MT 4x4 last year, drove it a year then through some circumstances was offered an amazing deal and lower payment for a 2013 RC AT 4x4, same color and all, I took it.

I miss the 5-spd about once a week for maybe 5 seconds, I absolutely LOVE, LOVE the auto. Probably because it's paired with the buckets now but it's a 4cyl truck. it's very comfortable and I just click it into gear and away I go.

I wish It has a 5-spd auto so 1st and second weren't so dang tall, but i understand why it's just a 4-spd. No need to change something that has worked so well over the years.

I'll be taking my first road trip in my auto RC in a month to PA to visit family, I'll have cruise on there by then also. I am really looking forward to it.

 

I ran 33x12.50x15's on steel wheels on my extended cab 2.7 auto 4x4. It was obviously slower, but I could still drive it on the highway no problems.

 

I had a 94 Ford Escort wagon, it had 88 HP and did 0-60 in 29 seconds. My Tacoma 2.7L 4cyl feels like a dragster compared to that POS.

 

Really? What did they do to them? I had a '91, same power, and it made 60 in about 18 seconds

Trans went at 30k. Timing belt at 70k (it was a 90k maintenance item).
Timing belt went again at 125k. Water pump was leaking (bad, puddles) when I got it back from the dealer that installed the timing belt.
Oh, and the trans was shuddering on acceleration in 3rd.. smoothed out once it shifted to 4th.

Got $1200 in trade for it on the '94 Toyota P/U in '96.

 

It had an exhaust leak, several oil leaks, fuel pump problems and finally threw a rod and never ran again. Also the seat belts didnt work and the brakes didnt work until they warmed up, which was kinda sketchy when first starting off. When it did run it would start shaking alot at around 70mph. I bought it for $400 and sold it for scrap for $400 but it did get me from A-B for a few years. It ran ok when I first got it but it already had 140,000 mi on it, and I got sick of spending money to fix it all the time.
