Hey everyone. I've been doing some research on ********* speaker upgrades, or trying to anyway. Alot of people say the head unit must be replaced to get any decent sound quality however the 2012 head unit isn't that bad looking and I have lifetime XM Pre paid on it so would prefer to keep it for now.

Issue I have is my speakers sound cheep and like they are made of paper.... Wonder why!

Has anyone had any experience ordering taco tunes speaker upgrade and adapter packages and installed them with a stock head unit? Does the sound quality sound like you have real speakers after? Hopefully someone can give me some in sight.

Stock HU's put out shitty sound and isn't a lot of power. I also think its 8ohm (not 100% sure) and that limits you a lot.

You are better off upgrading the HU and keeping the stock speakers then replacing the stock speakers and keeping the HU.

If you have a jbl I'd recommend doing just the speakers .

Normally if you do the headunit you will end up doing the speakers too.

It would be cheaper to do the speakers first , see of its enough of a improvement . If its not then you can shell out the money for a headunit .

I'd echo what TRD Toy85 said.

I had a system already from my old truck but I did have to buy door speakers. I got the adapters on Ebay just as good as the ********* for about 20 bucks and my installer had a pair of Rockford Fosgate 6x9's for me.

If you want to try and keep the headunit I still believe you'll get better sound from aftermarket speakers, especially when I saw how low-tech the stock ones were. How much better, and is it good enough, are questions you will be able to answer once you do it. If yes, great. If not just think about a new head unit.

I don't know a thing about XM but I think you may be able to transfer it to another radio..you'd have to check that out though because I do not know for sure.

Thanks for the tips. My 03' Ranger had a decent sound system and I miss the quality of sound. I think the 2012 Taco has enough volume but I think there is for sure room for improvement on the quality coming out of those paper speakers.

I can confirm that upgrading the HU and just using the stock speakers is a massive improvement by itself. I had to do that within a week of buying the truck, the radio was weak, thin, and just all muddy-sounding. Trying to listen to anything made me want to punch something.

I now have speakers on the way, too, but I was able to go more than a year with just replacing the HU. Driven properly, the stock speakers are acceptable. Not wonderful, but very listenable.

Pull the HU and don't look back. It's junk.
