I currently have a 2004 Toyota 4Runner SR5 4WD. Considering trading in on a new 2014 Tacoma Double Cab 4x4. The main reason is the desire for the open bed in the back as I like to hunt. Putting a deer or hog in the back of my 4Runner is a PITA. Other than that, I love my 4Runner.

There are several packages offered in Texas: Texas Edition and TSS in addition to the SR5. The deeler couldn't really tell me the difference. lol

Should I go for the alloy wheels over the steel wheels? Upgraded tires over the standard?

My off roading is primarily at my hunting lease with some pretty tough terrain (rough lease roads and sometimes muddy conditions).

Thoughts on trading into a Tacoma over my 4Runner?

The truck package is completely your preference. Don't worry so much about what wheels or tires are on the truck, but what is included on the truck mechanically. Tires you're guaranteed to change, and wheels you can swap. The TRD off road has the rear locker and ATRAC. Base you can get with the normal 4wd. Interior is a big difference between TRD and non TRD. Check them out and see what you like better. You may be happy with a base (which will get you through pretty much anything), or you may want to spend a little extra for some creature comforts.

If I go with the base, I would need to add a skid plate for sure. The skid plate on my 4Runner has saved my engine a few times on rough rocky lease roads. My offroading is limited to my hunting lease which has some nasty lease roads and uphill/downhill gravel/rocky sections. Occasionally, I will need to deal with muddy sections as well. I'm wondering if the base with an added skid plate will be similar to my 4Runner in 4WD capabilities.
