I just got done building a headache rack for my truck. This website has been extremely helpful in the design and fabrication process. This is my first project with welding and was a good learning experience. Just wanted to share my project to hopefully help others with their plans.

I needed the rack to protect the rear windows, hold ladders above the cab, and still be able to slide long material through the back window when needed. I think this will work out great.... I will report in after a few weeks on the job!

looks real good, and aside from that part where you said you could slide materials above the roof, i would have said its tall enough where you could put a 30" led bar in the middle, and maybe a square pointed back for bed lights on each side.

good lookin headache rack though bud

Do you have any photos of how you have it attached to the bed? I'm currently brain storming ideas for a future project.

Nice job OP , but why are you hauling long material through the back window and not on the headache rack ? I've hauled 20's on mine

I get alot if sheet vinyl in 12ft rolls.... slide it in the window and only sticks out of the bed a few feet... pretty heavy and akward stuff.

I'll get pics of how i attached it tomorrow.....

ok, so it is mounted with two different setups. for the front rail, i used 1/2" hex bolts, grade 8, 1.5" long. you can slip the bolt head into the rail, but you need to remove the bolt holding the rail on so the hex bolt can slide past, then reinstall the rail bolt.

then for the side on the angle iron, i used 3/8" grade 8 bolts and screwed them into unistrut nuts. the nuts work great but are too tall. after taking off about 1/8" on the bench grinder they slip in real nice..... ;)

and here she is with a ladder.... i had to use my temporary roof rack thing cause the bed liner coating hasn't fully cured yet, but it looks like it will work real well! i like rear ladder racks if it's a full time deal, but i only move ladders a couple times a month, so i'd rather have the headroom for loading and unloading the bed....

Why not just go from the top of the tailgate and up over the headache rack ?

    Too much, thanks TW.
Nice job man. i like having mine on. Can always take it off when you don't need it. I like the cab protection and extra hold down points for straps and stuff. Good job.

That's how I used to haul long lumber , sure it sticks up above the cab but it doesn't matter unless you are trying to get into a parking garage , if you had long lumber in the same way you have your ladder , you could get a whip effect onto the roof , been there , done that ( on my last truck )

This timber is approx 14' IIRC to get the idea
