Back up camera in rear view or radio?

I'm not really handy at these type of things but I just wanted the camera to go to the radio and no longer on the mirror..

I just came from an '08 Acadia that had the backup camera in the HU. I absolutely hate the backup camera in the rear view on the Tacoma. It is so small and hard to see, especially at night. I was told by my dealer that the Tacoma/Highlander/Tundra all have the backup camera i the rear view while all the cars have it in the HU. Not sure how this is a "safety" thing. The rear view is quite limited in the vision you see with the seats and sliding window blocking your view. IMO the backup camera in the HU will be MUCH safer as you will be able to see what is behind you easier.

I purchased the wiring kit from ebay and will install it next week. Looking forward to having the camera in the HU again.

It's very easy to install and you will like it.

I used the eBay cable with the stock head unit. Instead of cutting the feeds the mirror display, you tap into it and split the signal to the radio display. Tell the vendor on eBay you want both displays to work, so the instruction sheet (which comes with photos) will explain the tap into and not cut the display wire. I just removed the insulation and soldered to it. The area where you tap into the video is behind the coin tray to the left of the steering wheel by your left knee.

It is pretty much plug and play. You plug into the rear of the stock radio after removing it from the dash. The cable has a Toyota plug the fits right in. An additional wire with a factory pin on the end plugs into an existing plug on the radio. Probably took 40 mins for the mod. He will also make it with a switch so you can have both or either displays working.

The only issue is that the factory camera does not have the lines. They are in the mirror display, so no guide lines in the radio display.

I'm sorry, but does anyone else feel $70 is kinda expensive for what it is? From the pics it looks like 4-5 wires with two plugs. Does anyone know where to buy the plugs from?

I contacted the guy on ebay and he's making mine so that both displays work when in reverse but he's adding a switch so that I can turn the radio display on anytime. I mainly wanted the radio display since it's larger and backing up to my trailer would be easier to see. The switch is just for fun.

My last car had the camera in the radio, and although the screen was a lot bigger, I found that I looked at the camera most of the time since it was down and kind of away from everything else. I really hated the camera in the mirror at first, but have grown to love it. I like that it sort of naturally keeps my vision up, making it more natural for me to scan around the side mirrors and look behind me if needed. I have only had my truck for six months, and I already have a lot of trouble looking at the backup camera in the touchscreen of my wife's Highlander.
