Would a 2nd gen steering wheel with the audio controls work on my 1st gen?
I'd have to get a HU that would work with the steering wheel controls, but would it bolt up?

I'd really like steering wheel controls and this sounds like the cleanest install option i have.

hmmm..i doubt it..althought im sure it bolts up. Toyota loves reusing the same parts.

that said..i wouldn't be surpised if the piece behind out wheels wouldn't fit with it. And you'd have to do some MAJOR wiring for the HU controls to work, and CC and horn..not major major..but still a lot.

But come on..is it REALLY that hard to just reach and turn up the volume with the knob or change the track that way? seriously..

It distracts me a little (my HU isn't layed out right IMO) and I don't like being distracted while driving.

The wiring shouldn't be a massive issue, as long as you don't have any extra wires or short any wires you're good.

Well I can see there's no convincing you otherwise.

Why would you try this? Why not just get a different head unit

It's what anyone else would do, it's not innovative or thinking outside the box at all.

I'll see what i can find wiring diagram wise.
    Why wouldn't i? ^^

That's a fancy HU you got, i think i'm gonna get one eventually.
My HU came with a remote from the factory, but the PO lost it (i assume, it wasn't with the truck)

Many radios come with remotes nowadays. You can get a cheap radio with a remote for about $70.

I bought mine for $140 and love it. It's got a lot of options. Here's my video of it...

I don't know if you are talking about a stock HU or not but if you went with a pioneer HU you can get a steering wheel remote (CD-SR100). I'm sure other brands make something like that too. I have one and its perfect, you can position it where ever you want on the steering wheel which is a plus too.

Probably easier to try to get a new remote than change steering wheels

The only thing i don't like bout that HU is it won't stream pandora over BT.
I've got a Aftermarket HU, sony Xplode.

yeah, but it's not as innovative or a new idea.

Here's an idea: buy a new head unit with a remote then tape the remote to the steering wheel.
