09 Taco 84k mile 4 cyl 5 lug;; I must be doing something wrong ; I wanted to do a visual inspec on the original shoes, drum etc and I couldnt remove the drum to save my life hammer screwdriver and all. Thing is when it had 50k I removed them without so much drama. No I did not have the parking brake on. What gives there has to be a easyer way.

Use the 2 screw method. You will see some holes on the drum close to the hub that are threaded. They are there for this reason, put 2 screws in the threaded holes to back the drum off the hub. Not 100% of what the size is, but it's universal for all rotors and drums.

Sometimes there's a lip built up which makes them super hard to remove. It's very common. Best way to get them off is to mess with the little adjuster inside the drum. Adjust them smaller so the drum can slide off. You can access the star adjuster through the oblong hole underneath the brake line through the backing plate. It's a pain, but you risk damaging drum brake parts if you pull it off with too much force.

This applies is the drum is free from the hub and can move around. If its just seized onto the hub, hit it with a hammer, or use the jack screws.

I have 96k on my original shoes, and there is probably another 100k. Whenever I remove the drum, I blast everything with a can of brake clean, then lube all the contact points and the adjusting screw with brake grease. Your squeak may only be built up dirt and dust, so cleaning it may remedy that.
