I have searched until my fingers bleed and have not found much.
I have a 2002 Quad Cab TRD 3.4 Auto and need better towing and a little more go around town. I tow a jet ski about 120 miles to the lake (90 % uphill on the way to the lake). I can only do about 45 most of the time unless I really push it. My daily driving is in the 40 - 55 mph range to and from work (about 25 miles each way, no highway driving, all across town).
I am thinking about gearing to 4.56's but wonder if 4.88's might work since I have the auto with overdrive. Anyone have a similar setup? I hope this might help some others who are looking to get more pull out of there stock truck. I would correct the speedo using the Universal Speedometer Signal Interface SGI-5 C from Dakota Digital.

If you had 285 then maybe go for it but with 265 not worth doing a regear

My stock 99 has 4.56 gears and 31" tires (2.65x70-16 is a 31" tire). That combination only came with 4 cyl and automatic. Works fine for me, but I don't pull a boat with it.

It seems unusual to me that someone complains about their 6-cyl being under powered. Have you ever driven a 22R with only 95 hp? My 150hp 2.7 feels like a V8 by comparison. :p

What gears do you have now?

Way over geared? It has 4.10's now. In town half the time I find my self taking it out of overdrive. At 45 I am only doing around 1500 rpms.

There is a 4-banger around Houston with 265s and 4.88s, he swears up and down it should have came from the factory like that.

When not towing it goes good and I did have several Taco's in the past with 2.4L engines.
The towing is the main reason for the gear change. I have had this truck since it had 30,000 miles on it (now 131,000) and I don't won't to trade it.
But due to the normal in town drive and the towing of the jet ski I think I would enjoy the lower gear. I have changed the gears on 2002 (4 speed auto) corvette from 315 to 373 and loved it and could have gone to 4.11 and still been happy. The auto overdrive makes the diff.

I just changed my plugs and wires and fuel filter. I have not towed the ski since the change.
    Maybe that will help.

This is why I love the fourms, get the info out there for folks to use.
I am hoping someone will chime in that is using this setup.

I have a brochure for the 2004 models. Lots of real info in the spec section. I assume the specs are similar for the 2002 models.

The pre-runner regular cab with e-locker came with 4.30 gears  .
The pre-runner double cab with v6 came with 4.10 gears.
4.56 was not available at all for that year.

Since you only have one diff (2wd), it may only cost you a few hundred to change to 4.56 gears, if you can pull the diff yourself to save labor. Should make a big difference going up that long grade, but at a cost of cruising speed on the flatlands.

That would explain why the 2001 PreRunner TRD extra cab I had seemed to have more pep around town than the Quad Cab. I am sure the Quad has a little more weight also. I can pull it myself, but I just don't have the time. I have found a local shop that will do it with the full Master kit for $700.00.

i have an automatic with 285s and regeared to 4.88. with 265s you definitely do not want to go 4.88s... you'll regret it. for my money, unless i was planning on running larger tires, i'd stick with the stock gearing and tow without overdrive.

Thanks for the info. Its best to hear from someone running the setup.
Yea I think the 4.56 will be the lowest I will go. From what I have read the 4.56 gears would have put you closer to stock if you started with the 4.10's.

The problem is I need to find someone who has the same tires and the 4.56 gears to find out how they like the setup. So far I have not found anyone.

The 4.56 gears only came in prerunner 4 cylinder models. They are not an option for the v6. I have a double cab 4 cylinder with 4.56 rear end from the factory. It's nice but with 32" tires I wish I had 4.88 gears. It really it's not worth the price.

i seriously doubt you'll find someone with 4.56s and stock size tires. people only regear for larger tires and 4.56 isn't a popular option for autos. Most wait till they have 33s or 35s to regear.

    4.88s for 33s and auto T and 4.56 for 33s and manual T

4.88/5.29 for 35s for both trannies. but id do 5.29s for autos and 4.88s for manuals

it costs over a grand to do it so no one really does it for stock tires and dd.

that said, go for it. Its your truck. Can always sell or trade + cash the 4.56 for a 4.10 if you don't like it. just don't expect a full refund

Yea I know, that is the problem. I understand that finding someone that has done this will be tough, but I thought I would try. I have found a few threads were some folks want to know about this for better towing on hills.
I will go for it anyway as soon as I find out if my work contract is renewed.
I will then post before and after rpms and opinons of how it drives.
