actually the noise is because, with the clutch out the engine spins the primary shaft in the tranny giving the loose gear noise since the primary is spinning and the gears turn with no load since its in neutral. When you press the clutch, the transmission stops spinning and the noise goes away because you disengage the clutch. Its the same with most motorcycles as well. its called multi harmonic excitation and happens when a gear box has no load yet still being turned.

I've read through this thread a few times before and considered myself lucky for never hearing it until now.

i just got back from a Labour Day long weekend roadtrip and noticed it quite loudly while stopped with the AC on, pushing in on the clutch relieved it. I have about 45,000km or 28,000 miles on my 09.

i have the exact noise the op is talking about. it sounds like complete shit if my new truck is to sound like a diesel i want the extra torque as well...

the dealer had found nothing it seems to be an intermittent problem but, it seems that it's only quite while it's there idk. they did not seem to be very concerned about it either which kind of pissed me off a bit.

there was also a general tendency in my conversation with the service manager of him suggesting that i was imagining the problem. like the noises i was hearing where in my head and not from the truck.

when it does do it it's loud quite loud when the ac is on as a matter of fact the clutch act's normal meaning it's shitty.

the truck drives fine but it sounds horrible at idle and i believe it to be a problem if not right now absolutely in the future.

In my opinion, it's not the throwout bearing. The noise doesn't go away if I put some pressure on the clutch pedal. It should if it's the throwout bearing rattling around on the shaft. It goes away if push the clutch all the way down. If the throwout bearing was bad, putting max pressure on it by fully depressing the clutch pedal should make it worse. It's not the pilot bearing. That should be quiet when the clutch pedal is not being depressed, and the transmission is neutral. It's all turning together then, and there's no action on the pilot bearing. I think it's either gear noise or input shaft bearing noise.

It's there as long as the transmission's input shaft is turning. I can also hear the noise when driving at certain speeds, and throttle settings, especially in 1st gear, and somewhat in 2nd gear. I also hear it if the transmission is in 1st gear, the clutch pedal is depressed, and the vehicle is rolling slowly. I noticed this while I was up in the mountains last night.

I vote for gear noise, but it could be input shaft bearing. I guess if it's the bearing, we may see some worsening, or failures over time. Your noise may be different, but this is what I've noticed. Try the same tests I've done, and see if you get the same results...

future plan of 2" drop and any type of rim thats not a steelie. grille and BHLM mods, maybe....
replace the TOB and my noise went away but slowly coming back again (just like my blower motor squeek  ) as the TOB wears in. I was hearing a different noise, it also has that noise you mentioned about harmonics, but fresh trans oil made some of it go away. it will always be there just go with a better trans fluid. im running synthetic now, not sure what the factory used. certain noises are always going to be there, like the injector rattle we complain about, its just the nature of mechanics. still love my Tacoma!!! getting over 22 city and 28mpg on trips,i have pulled as high as 31 and rides sooooooooooooooooooo much better then my GMC Canyon. i can deal with a TOB squeak or trans harmonics.

I know it is an ancient thread but my 07 makes the same noise. When the engine is warm ac on in neutral terrible terrible noise coming from the engine area. Push clutch in gone. Turn ac off gone. Took it to dealer after i got it last year in 2012 but the one time i wanted to noise I could make it do it.

mine did this, had the clutch and release bearing changed by dealer and still there, so they went ahead and replaced the whole transmission and put a new release bearing again to cover everything, a few months later and it was back, not as loud but a year later and still going with the noise.

Just for the record, I posted earlier in this thread back in 2009/2010 several months after buying my '09 new. My truck now has over 110k miles on it and it's still making this EXACT same noise - just like it did when it was brand new. It hasn't gotten any worse, the transmission still works great, the clutch still works great, no trans. oil leaks... everything is fine.

Yes, it can be annoying, and I don't believe it should do this, but the bottom line is it's just the nature of the beast... it's not hurting anything at all... don't worry about it.

I too have the rattling problem. 80k on my '10, at this point I gave up caring about it.

The other thing that's annoying is how squeaky my clutch pedal is. Depress the clutch & it squeaks like an SOB.

My truck otherwise drives like new, rock solid. But to a passenger not used to all the crappy noises coming from my 5sp, the truck sounds like its falling apart.

Yeah, I have the squeaky clutch too - and find it FAR more annoying than the transmission noise. It's worse when the cab is hot after it's been sitting out in the parking lot in the sun closed up. There doesn't appear to be an easy way to get any lube to it either - without some disassembly. Gotta do that soon though.

I now have 120,000 on mine and it still runs flawlessly. I wouldn't worry about it. One of my sports cars does the same thing and my Husqvarna TE630 enduro does it.
