I am going to be ordering a new Tacoma In November and was wondering if anyone knows if you can ask for a custom color when you order?

Actually its not really custom it is a color that Toyota offers for the 4-Runner but not for the Tacoma. I am wanting too get Attitude Black Metallic which is offered on the 4-Runner and not just the Regular Black that is offered for the Tacoma.

I am sure it would be an extra cost but I don't see why they wouldn't do it.

Good luck with that. The 4Runner is made in Aichi, Japan. The Tacoma is made in Texas and Tijuana, Mexico. The Attitude Black Metallic isn't offered for the Tundra, either, so neither of the Tacoma plants has any reason to stock this paint.

You can get the truck repainted at the dealer's collision shop. Write it into the new truck's bill of sale.

Really I did not know that. So do they make only Tacomas at these plants or any other models? Because the Attitude Black comes on other models as well.

Wouldn't hurt to ask the dealership. The chances are pretty much zero though. If you think that if everyone wanted their vehicles painted differently then it would be a pain in the ass. Especially if the vehicles aren't in the same place. It would add cost to the vehicle, time, possible back log of vehicles etc. I would suggest that if you really wanted it, get the truck and think about getting the truck repainted from someone.

The main reason I want it is because I hear that the Metallic paint jobs are better than the non Metallic paint jobs. Mainly because of the fact that there is no clear on the non metallic paint. I live in Florida so I definitely would like to have some kind of protection from the Florida sun.

^What do you mean there is no clearcoat on non-metallic paint?

If you want noticeable sun protection, get Alpine White.

Texas plant makes the Tacoma and Tundra. Tijuana plant makes the Tacoma only (and only V6 double cab models).

There are other logistics problems, too - body-colored plastic pieces like the bumper cover and fender flares are painted at supplier facilities.

But not all. My 2014 DCSB V6 4x4 TRD OR was made in San Antonio. Maybe Mexico makes the base trim version? Or maybe I just got lucky?

I have just read that the White and Black (and maybe its the white only because I have read alot more about the white being an issue than the black) have the clearcoat mixed into the paint so its not a two Stage paint like the Metallic paint.

True. But single stage paint and not having clear are two totally different things. You probably see a lot more single stage paint on the road every day than you might realize. If you take care of it, it will be fine.

Or unlucky as the case may be. :p The Tijuana plant has been making Tacos (and tacos?) since 2002, while the Texas plant started in 2011. Workers at the Tijuana plant are more experienced.

    Stock for now
Not exactly: my '14 DCSB 4x4 was made in San Antonio, but I saw a '14 Access Cab PreRunner on the lot that said made in Tijuana.

Doesn't matter what models are made at what plant.
There are Tundra colors that are not available on the Tacoma, and no amount of money will get it from the factory.
The assembly line, including paint, is fully automated. To do a non-standard paint job would require your body to be removed from the assembly line, hand-painted, then reinstalled onto the line tooling for completion.

2nd problem: Tijuana makes ALL of the beds. They make most of the Doublecab trucks. Texas assembles the Mexican beds onto the Texas bodies.

So unless you order a doublecab that is coming from Mexico, the bed and body would have to be custom painted at different facilities.... and Mexico isn't going to have any paint colors not used on the Tacoma.

The dealer may be willing to take your money... and they will farm the truck out to a local body shop for a repaint prior to delivery. They will charge you significantly more than it would cost if you just had the truck painted yourself.

TMMX does not make Access Cab bodies.

Ask my wife how the clearcoat has been holding up on her '04 Rav4.

It looks like shit. The clear has completely peeled off of the top of the spare tire cover, and we are starting to see some signs of failure on the spoiler.

We've had small blister-like spots on the hood and roof since it was a couple of years old.

Problem with clearcoat is when you get a rock chip or scratch (or LoveBug body shell), it is compromised and it's only a matter of time before it lifts and fails.
