I have a 2011 Tacoma 6cyl, 2wd, auto transmission and limited slip diff.
I spend 95% of my driving time on paved relatively flat roads and only seldom tow my 17 ' fishing boat.
It seems the "default' setting is to leave the LSD on all the time. If I turn it of the LSD lights will come on on the inst. panel.
I am wondering if there is an advantage to driving with the LSD OFF. maybe better gas milage? Less tire wear? and only turning it ON pulling the boat out of the slip or on a slick stretch of road. It seems my last vehicle was supposed to be operated that way it was an F150.
    All comments and suggestions welcome!
    Thanks
    Steve W.

Unless this was special made truck, or after-market product... All Tacomas since 2009 have open differentials and electronic/ brake TRACTION CONTROL ('TRAC' and 'AUTO LSD' in 2WD). The Off Road TRD has a selectable LOCKING REAR DIFFERENTIAL for emergency use.

MODES on typical 2011 2WD Tacomas:

    1) Standard Mode: TRAC ON (light limited slip action to reduce spin on a non-traction rear tire with engine regulation and brakes)

    2) Press VSC OFF button quickly: AUTO LSD (strong limited slip, no engine output regulation)

    3) Stop moving, press and hold down VSC OFF button for 3-5 seconds: VSC OFF (no limited slip, both TRAC and VSC are off)
