Taco Bed Cover

Hello all,

I'm new to owning a Tacoma and new to this forum but I know theres a lot of experience here so here's my question.

I'm now looking at bed covers and I think I've narrowed it down to two:

Extang Solid Fold or G4 Elite

From your experiences and what you use now, can you give me some feedback on both with pros and cons?

I have the Undercover Flex and honestly, I don't like it. I wanted a tri-fold and had it narrowed down to the Extang and the Undercover. I got the Undercover for a great price so it was hard to pass up but I wish I would have went ahead and pulled the trigger on the Extang.

 

Love my Elite G4.

Pros: Love that fact I can lock the front and rear. I can use my factory rails. It doesn't cover the rear window when it is folded completely.

Cons: wish the rear weatherstrip is better engineered. wish it can support more weight on the panels. Wish it was cheaper

 

How much space is left on the bed rail? I really want to be able to mount a roof rack type set up to the bed rails, but the concern I had about the G4 was the above the rail mounting of the weather protection.

 

From the bottom of the panel to the top of the bed rail is exactly 1 1/4"

 

How much of the black plastic rail cap is still exposed?

 

I was really asking for comparisons between the two, sorry. Can we see some pics of both the G4 and the Extang Solid Fold?

Thanks all for the info and pics. After reading a lot (I mean a lot) of feedback and video, I think I'm gonna go with the G4.

What is the appeal of a trifold over a roll up type? A bit more difficult to break in to, perhaps, but what else?

 

Mainly what you just said plus they're more durable. It has some of the benefits of a soft cover and some of the benefits of a solid tonnuea. Kind of hard to beat.

The problem I'm having with my G4 is that it is not very waterproof. Maybe I just need to re-position it but it seems to leak a fair amount. I definitely cannot keep anything in the back that I want to stay dry.

 

If you can find an installer in your area, ask them for their thoughts. I personally know one and I ended up going with a hard cover (ARE LSII). The bottom line is that if you expect any of the tri-folds to be waterproof, they won't be. But I'll also add that the same holds true for some of the hard covers. Not trying to convince you to go with the hard cover, I just wanted to share what an installer who sells many different types told me.

For user: bjboucher You can buy weatherstrip at a automotive parts store or hardware store ie... home depot, lowes, etc... And retry resealing it. I bought mine in fall of 12' and it has the newer hardware so the most water leaks I have is mostly small drops here and their in the front only.

 

Mine is the new set-up as well. I just bought mine like 6 months ago. It's leaking in several places, I just haven't taken the time to really try and figure out where/why. Haven't really needed it to be water sealed since I got it so I haven't put much thought into it yet.

 

Another vote for the G4. It's expensive, but you get what you pay for. I'm very happy with mine.
