I use my Tacoma for training hunting dogs, and hunting. Nothing too radical off road, I have my 78 FJ-40 for that stuff. I was wondering what anyone has used for a roof rack and how they like it? I might want to get one for longer camping trips in the field. Any preference of cargo basket vs cargo box? I have an access cab, and do not want anything over sized for the roof.

There is not an option for a factory roof rack for access cabs but some members have cut/modified the ones for the DC to fit. You will have to go aftermarket manufacturers like Yakima or Thule to find racks for access cabs.

I was leaning towards Yakima on my own research, but wondered if anyone had an opinion on the aftermarket brand that worked best, or if their was a preference of cargo basket vs box.

I much prefer the box over basket. It holds longer items that take up a disproportionate amount of space in the bed or cab, keeps them dry, locked, and makes less wind noise.

The basket looks cooler, but I've rarely even seen one with anything in it.

Can't help you for the rack, I have a shell and welded one out of square tubing.

I like the look of the basket and figured if you already have a bedcover, then you can store longer items covered in your bed and have the best of both worlds.

How much weight are you wanting to put up there?

maybe 60 pounds is the weight I would put up there. For hunting I want to use the interior space for shotguns and other stuff that would mean storing other gear on the roof. The truck bed is pretty full with the dog box
