Well that's good to know. So I have about 3 gallons of gas left after the light comes on. I always grab gas quickly after it comes on.

The 2.7 5 lug will do it.
It's really pushing it for a lifetime average, but if you keep your speeds down it's possible.
25mpg is 500 miles on 20 gallons. Since the light is on before 18 gallons, and you hit the "E" mark not long after, it's just dumb to try and push it while carrying a spare gallon or two.

Just fuel up when the light comes on and calculate your mileage, knowing that you could get 500 in an emergency.

    Doesn't count.

Only count miles above full with the engine running :p

Then I can't count around 150 miles a tank. Might as well keep it on running then. :notsure:

And, as luck would have it, that's what my 'Grandpa truck' just happens to be.

I've made 751 miles on 20.4 gallons once. No need for me to push it that far again.

    You are far from "average"

I'd hate for some dummy to be mislead thinking that what you can accomplish is realistic for a truck with an auto trans and LA traffic.

This better be a powerful transposition of numbers. If not, you're claiming 36.8 MPG, and I think you'd need to be drafting or being towed for that ;)

    I'm guessing you mean 571 / 20.4 for 27.99mpg, right?

I've gotten 27.7 over a full tank's worth with a normal commute already, I think I can top it ;)

'I've made 751 miles on 20.4 gallons once.'

not in a taco, no way you got 36.83 MPG, unless you have a 751 mile downhill, maybe even some tailwind help, even a 4 banger would not reach that MPG..

    recalculate...

    Nope.

    He's a Hypermiler.

Manual transmission, he can shut the engine off when going downhill.

every downhill has an uphill, now if you are talking tucking in behind a big rig at about 2' from back of the trailer, ok....dangerous, but I could see a slight possibility....

Maybe briefly, but for 571 straight miles? That's weapons grade somethingoranother, right there.

Think what you will. It's not even my best mpg tank, just most miles.

Here is 9 years of bullshit.

    Google "Hypermiling"
It's not a new concept... been around for a long time. The more advanced methods were publicized around the time the first hybrids came out.

Advanced methods for saving gas. Some work in all situations, some work in common situations, and some can not be used in heavy traffic (at least not without being inconsiderate to other drivers).

Full engine shutdown can be a big saver, since an engine not running is using quite a bit less fuel than an engine at idle, or being dragged along by the trans.
