Disclaimer: The OP of this thread has since been banned. I've volunteered to take over the OP duties and will continue to update this post with information. The subsequent posts are form the original OP and I will leave those posts as they are.

    _________________________________________________________

General information (in my own unscientific explanation):
    - On-Board Air (aka OBA) is to have compressed air available on your vehicle for several different reasons: Air up tires, to activate locker(s), train horns, etc.
    - Installation involves 12V electrical (relay, wiring, switch) and plumbing for the air (a lot of people will use Loc Tite 545 thread sealant as oppose to good ol teflon tape)
    - Kits are available through Viair, ARB, etc but a lot of people piece together their own kits to fit their needs

Most OBA set ups will have the following components:

    Compressor
    [IMG]

Tank (which a lot of people mount underneath the bed where the spare usually mounts)
    IMAG0121_b2a8e5a2c22805040353b1e7e89332d47ec0fc85.jpg

Pressure Switch (needed if you have a tank so the compressor knows when to turn on/off)

    Quick Disconnect fittings
    [IMG]

    Pressure gauge
    [IMG]

For air lockers and the Viair set up, you'll need a pressure regulator
    [IMG]

airline (not to be confused with air hoses). This is what most people use to plumb air to/from the compressor/tank/quick disconnects/etc
    [IMG]
    various fittings
    [IMG]

    Hose and air chuck

I agree. There is a whole thread on Hard lines and similar setups on a VW forum./ My truck is NOT a 'tuner' setup, but I am taking the knowledge I gain from them and will apply it to my install.

I feel HARD LINES have pros and cons, then again, looking at out break line setups - they are all hardlines.

accumulators, filters, water traps are all part of the systems and these guys know there stuff.

Haha, not rushing you at all. OBA is on my to do list. I am just subbing so that I can refer back to it once I start building my system. Take your time.

My current gear sitting on the floor is

    2x Compressors
    5gal tank ALUMINUM
    Pressure Switch
    Various Parker fittings
    Universal Quick disconnects
    Wire
    Switches
    Fuses

    Considering

    1. Digital send units for monitoring the pressure?
    2. Digital gauges?
    3. Thermal management system?
    4. Thermometers/?

    Already Installed

    Dual 31M batterys
0 gauge run from front to rear
    Digital Volt Meters

    Future aspirations

Hopefully I can find a fabricator that will make me a set of AIR TANK SLIDERS and hydtostatic test them for over 200psi
Then I might repurpose the air tank as a water tank being that it is ALUMINUM

When the time comes, I want to put in a HO Alternator. At least 3x the Tacoma's Alternator output. Found a 440amp ;)

I started looking for the tools online to bend the tubing, flare, terminate etc. HomeDepot has most of it but at a premium price point. AMAZON has them at almost $30-$40 cheaper.

Okay donkeys. We all have been looking for the perfect mounting spot for our compressors. I think I finally found it.

In the absolute last part of the install of compressors, I ran into an issue on the passenger side storage compartment in the bed next to the power outlet. IT WAS TO SHORT for the length of the compressor. Made a bracket out of some aluminum angle bar and started to bolt her up.

Well, ran into another hitch. when the box is fully screwed into the factory position. It hits the bracket I made. Fiddling with it, I noticed the backplate from where the tail lights are!

That spot in the wheel well where the tail lights is. Perfect fit, plate and all. drill 4 holes on either side (both for me) and run the rest of the wiring/ plumbing. No clue why we ALL missed this over the years.

After my correspondence with a couple manufacturers, they said the only position I could NOT mount it would be upside down due to moisture. ANY OTHER POSITION IS FINE. Asked if all compressors were the same, and was told any non oiled system should be.

The location up there has relatively clean air and lots of flow to cool it off. If you wanted to relocate the air intake and filters, you could go straight to either box similar to the other "breather mods"

In the middle of it right now. Stopped to fill my belly. Will upload some shortly with tapatalk. Nutz how no one thought of this before. Or posted about it for that matter.

pic of the back plate of the tail light housing area from up under the wheel well

Might use that space for my water pump for the OBW also.

Notice in the pic above. There is my power distribution block and some 00 gauge in there.

Temporary location for the 5 gallon air tank. right above the tow hitch. Drill 2 holes in painted them then use hose clamps to attach it
might even have room to put my spare tire back in.

Just waiting on the relays I ordered. Finished up a couple more plumbing connections. Used two 90° 3/8" elbows, and four 3/8" hose nipples to connect the compressors.

Started looming closer at the SPOD solution when I started counting the amount of relays my system would require. Wont be a good option for me. I will need more than one of these can provide. Two would not be cost efficient. I can build one for less.

Exactly. Yours will fit. Put it on the TRD 120v Outlet side. Yes Rear bulk head of the tail lights.

    Some install tips for everyone.

    1. Remove the Tire for easier access of the space
    2. Remove wheel well lining at least half way and fold backwards.
    3. Remove the tail light and disconect the harness
    4. remove the cubby hole box with a TORX bit and disconnect the harness
    5. take some nail polish/ paint/ touchup paint/ etc. and 'paint' the bottoms of the rubber feet
    6. while it is still wet, shove the compressor up in that space and firmly plant the feet in the desired install location. -YOU NOW HAVE DRILL HOLES MARKED-
    7. Use a drill to make the holes. Slightly oversized is fine. Washers are a blessing. - I USED A STEPPER BIT-
    8. Grab a buddy to tighten a couple nuts on the opposite side while you hold it in place so you can finish the work - washers on the bolt head, then through the rubber grommet on the compressor, through the bulk head, then a washer, lock ring, and finally the nut - or just use a few nylock nuts in place of the lock ring/ lock washer and the standard nut
