I have a 1998 tacoma w/2.7 liter 4 banger and when it is first started, it makes an awful grinding sound near the front part of the engine. After it runs for about 20 seconds the sound smooths out and the engine runs fine. If you shut it down and restart imediately the same noise occurs. I thougt it was the timing chain, so I have removed the valve cover and everything looks good, just a bit of wear on the cam gear, but the chain is tight. The guides do not look broken or worn. Any suggestions would be helpful.

I found that the harmonic balance was separated from the back pully. I believe this may be causing the engine to slap.
