My Taco has 90K+ on it now and runs great. However, I was wondering when it does start wearing out,..say the motor, what are you Taco Drivers doing with regard to engine repair or replacment? I certainly expect my Taco to go for 200k miles but it never hurts to prepare ahead of time for an engine swap,..or transmission swap for that matter.

    What say you?

I say, 90k isn't even breaking a sweat yet (assuming you've kept up with the maintenance).

That is incredible. What year is it? You have any pictures? That Taco deserves a Badge of Honor as well as yourself.

I service my Taco properly and do the maintenance myself, except for transmission flushes, which I take to the Local Dealership.

But that still raises the question. Do Taco owners purchased new motors or have their engines rebuilt? Or do thay purchase those low mileage motor from Japan?

I think you are more likely to total the truck than suffer a catastrophic engine failure.

Your frame will fall apart from corrosion before your motor will die. Transmission, who knows. I got 230k on my gen 1 4 banger and I towed all the time with no trans cooler. Ran beauty when I sold it, but needed serious attention the the rotted frame.

My 1st Gen had 200k on it and ran like a charm besides having to rethread a spark plug that blew out. Transmission never drained or flushed and had no problems.

It'll be someone else's problem long before the engine dies and hopefully before the transmission dies. I'm at 100k miles and so far, no plans have been made for a trade in or replacement of the engine or transmission.

Just got rid of my '04 TRD OR with 137k on it. Nothing in the world wrong with it mechanically, and the only problem I've ever had was transmission hunting in cruise with a full bed during a 4 hour drive to my new digs. I probably did more wear to it in those 4 hours than in the other 4 years that I owned it.

That was my fault for not killing the OD...I know better, but had a lot on my mind that day, and common sense didn't make an appearance until I was almost to my new home.

Most folks buy Tacoma's expecting them to drive forever with regular maintenance and not doing what I did up there ^ too very often, lol. Some broken hardware (springs and such) might be needed replacements for heavy wheeling, but these things are still (reasonably) bullet proof.

Mine was getting some frame corrosion from having been a Minnesota truck and the owner of the dealership (now in jail) having his people (I think) fudge the bulletin, and the parking break light was too sensitive, but otherwise it just started and ran through snow and highway like a champ.

Pugga, in a 100K have you done a transmission flush yet? If so, at what mileage?

I didn't do a full flush, just a drain and refill at 50k miles. I'm actually at 98k miles and am debating doing a full flush at 100k vs. just another drain and refill. A drain and refill only replaces about 5 quarts of oil and the transmission takes upwards of 15 (17 if I remember correctly).

my truck is lifted on 33's, and I have been told I drive like a dick spending too much time sideways. I tow my 5000lb boat just about every weekend and offroad a few times a month. oh yea btw I have 180k on my original clutch. truck runs like a champ and my check engine light just came on last week for the first time for a misfire due to a coil failure. very happy so far

We do not have much rust down here. We have to order it have it sent down from Kansas. If you take care of your vehicle you will not get rust here, meaning basic washing.

Wow! From what you Taco owners are telling me is that my Taco will last a looooooooong time.

WRT to Flushing vs Draining Transmission Fluid,...I would flush the transmission. I will Flush every 50k miles. Draining I consider a waste of time as you only drain away a small portion of the fluid.

Someone on here has one with over 300k on it. I wouldn't worry about it. The last 1st gen I had I bought with 250k on it and sold with 260k. Ran perfect. I expect at least that from my current 05. By then I'll either be sick of it, it will be rusted to death, or I'll be tearing it down for a rebuild.

My grandad had a 1st gen 4 banger that had 380k on it when he died in 09. Only things he ever had to do to the truck were regular maintenance. My grandmother sold it to a neighbor a year or so after he died. He's put about 60k more on it and has had 0 issues.
