I am thinking about replace my steering rack in 6-12 months. I have a 2000 4x4 that's been mildly lifted with 32-33" tires most of its life. I have heard of people going through 2-3 racks in the amount on miles I have (210,000) but mine seems to be hanging in there. I just replaced the steering pump and cleaned the res real good, and of course put in fresh fluid. The steering is tight and it doesn't wander, yet it does moan a little here and there and the steering is pretty stiff.

Based on this info, a few questions:

Does it sound like I need a replacement soon?
Are any aftermarket racks as good as the OEM?
Does anyone have any tips or insight into changing the rack out?

    3xLocked, lifted, well used
Noise could be air in the system.

Jeez, I knew that... but didn't think of it for some reason! I'll see about getting possible air out, thanks.

I suppose I'll be holding onto the rack and just monitoring its performance for some time. Sometimes I get a little itchy about replacing parts.

If it's not leaking I wouldn't mess with it.

You could try a fluid swap though, easy enough.
