I'm curious how the stealership knew about the current mileage on my Tacoma? I have done all maintenance by myself so far other than replacing front shocks/new tires by local shops?

Does it matter? Why do you have to make such a vague thread? You could always phone and ask?

    Likely.

Toyota.com is always way low on mine.
They just take last reported and increase it by averages.

I bought it new back in December 2012. They either have pretty good guess or they may have the boogy man spied on my Taco. They said it has 11500 miles on it now and that I should get it in for maintenance. I was like WTF, how did they knew it?

And December '12 to October '13, a vehicle would be expected to have between 10,000 and 15,000 on it.

    They guessed.

It's the gps/data recorder installed by your insurance company that sends the info out to Toyota and the insurance company. They know how far you drive everyday to work and if you use it for business.

    Data recorder = Yes.
Most vehicles have had them since the late '90s.

GPS? No. Not unless you have an in-dash GPS system.

Communication to the insurance company and Toyota?

    No.

You can communicate to your insurance company only if you install an OBD-II device. Think about it... how would Toyota know what insurance company I use? They can't install a device that passively communicates to the insurance company.

Communications to Toyota? Only if you have Toyota's version of OnStar. AFAIK, it's not available in the Tacoma.

I think they guess based off some average. Dealerships are always way off on mine. My truck is 2 months old and I just hit 1,100 miles. I noticed after I took it home they already had a oil change service sticker in the upper portion of the windshield for Dec or Jan, if I remember correctly.
