I've heard when you take this off it helps with horsepower and a few more things. Is this a myth? It was off the truck when I went to go see it the first time. The guy I got it from has a neighbor who is a Toyota technician and said it really doesn't do much. He put it back on before I bought it the next afternoon.

I'm perfectly fine with it on but if it helps my MPG or power why not? Thanks.

The air box was completely gone? Like no filter there? If so, take the truck back and get your money back.

No measurable gains on a normally aspirated engine.

    Wait, what?

Are you sure you're not talking about the deck plate mod?

Isn't that where you drill holes in the air filter? And the box was taken off and put back on before I bought it. So its in right now. I previously found a picture of it off but I can't find it anymore.

That is not what you linked to.
That is simply a resonator that helps quiet the sound from the intake.

Removing it will not help performance or MPG.

Oh yeah you can remove that and cap everything if you want. It's not worth it in my eyes.

If that resonator was removed, and the hole not capped, then they were completely bypassing the air filter and MAF sensor  . Incoming air will take the path of least resistance (ie - 99% of the air into the throttle body will be unfiltered). This would also cause the motor to not run right with the MAF indicating very little air flow all the time.

I can't believe that a Toyota tech would do this.

I'm guessing it was capped off. If not, I would do as my first post suggests.
