Meaningless, but potentially interesting, single data point on trade-to-retail value

I traded my 2004 Tacoma TRD OR in (apparent) solid Good Condition with some extra's (LeBra (sp?), vinyl roll-back bed cover, and bull bar, broken tail gate latch--that's a security feature that stops very small thieves and anyone lacking the strengtt to pick up heavy things over the bed rail) with a 137k miles for...

    $11,500 last Tues

It now sits on the dealer lot for $15998.

    I bought it for $13,000 in 2009 with 80k.

That's not a critique or a complaint; I was quite happy with getting rid of a corrosion bomb (it spent its first 7 years living in MN) waiting to go off, and quite happy with the trade price/overall deal. It's just an observation, and I thought perhaps an informative one if you're into data sets where N=1, aka anecdotes. :)

Oh, and good gravy do these things seem to hold value...

edit...oops, I think I meant to post this in a different forum subforum; been haunting the 2nd gen threads and forgot there were others.

This is normal practice for dealerships. That's how they make their money.

This is a college town with a big Army helo base 20 miles away. I think they'll get very close to that ridiculous price for it, kids with a little money doing what kids with a little money will do. Don't ask me how I know; the best lessons are the hard ones, early.

It cost me $1,500 on the flip to drive it for almost 4 years to the day. I'm satisfied enough with with that.

Wow, you paid 2.6 cents per mile. That is damn good. And you sold it to the dealer no less! A brand new Tacoma(DC TRD 4x4 V6 etc) will cost you ~39 cents per mile after 200,000 miles.

    That's freaking crazy.
My '08 has 53k on it and was only 13.5k two years ago.

Wow, thanks for sharing that...it's always interesting to see how well these Tacos hold their value. And it isn't just for the older ones either. Last month, I looked up used '12 Tacos. some had 15K or 20K miles on them, but the dealers were listing them only a couple hundred less than the brand new Tacos. WTF? lol

    Typical of many Toyotas.

Wife wanted a newer car back in 1999. We looked at some used Corollas, and ended up buying a new '00 Echo for only a little more.
