I messed around with it earlier today and it worked perfectly every time - going from 4hi to 4lo. Maybe it had been so long since it was in 4lo, it had trouble.

I did use the suggestion of pushing the clutch in and letting it it sit for about 5 seconds before going to 4lo.

Lesson learned: routinely engage 4lo in order to keep things properly lubricated.

    Thanks for the help.

Kind of a problem if you end up waiting too long to engage 4wd and are stuck already. I'd much rather have a manual TC shifter.

Check my build thread...too much to list.
Like others have said pushing the clutch to the floor is key. When ever I've had issues with 4lo engaging is because of that. 2nd gens are kind of picky in that respect.

I've noticed if I sort of baby it into position, by just turning it slow and casual it seems to not engage every time. But, if I give it a quick snappy twist into the position, it seems to engage quickly. That's for either setting. Just my findings after a couple of months.

Being a mall crawler, I totally forgot I had to put it in 4H and 4L to keep things smooth. I've never done it before so of course my face went [IMG]!!! So I ran out just now in this stormy weather just to do it.

    Thanks for the reminder. :)

When the 4WD is not engaged the front axles are the only things that turn none of the gears spin. On the right side of the front diff there is an axle support bearing unless the diff is turning it does not get much oil it's a long way from it. If nothing is spinning in the transfer case the parts that actuate the shifting inside don't get much oil because they are high up in the case. There will be those that say never use 4X4 on the pavement Toyota, Chevy, Ford, Dodge do not seem to think it is big a deal otherwise they would have never said to use 4 high once a month for at least 10 miles nowhere does it say in the mud, sand or on snow just at least 10 miles a month. Don’t try to park with it in 4WD just down the road then shift it out, the radius of a curve on the road is nowhere enough to cause any binding. You’re going to hear never ever do that or the truck will explode I would suggest you read the manual and decide for yourself. I feel the failure of the needle bearings at the right axle ends (vibrations, noise etc.) are caused by lack of lube can’t prove it but it makes sense.

Traded the 2015 TRD Pro 6spd Supercharged on a PowerWagon and could not be happier. My 2011 Tacoma with the TX Baja package (Added by me) is still treating me great. My 1985 Toyota never skips a beat.
if you are at a dead stop, clutch all the way in and a little extra pressure vs shifting just to make sure :) switch it. If it beeps rock it a little bit and try again.

I miss mechanical shifters where if it was a little binding you could make it work.

I used to have a '72 Chevy C10 SB 4x4 and you had to really man handle the TC shifter to get it to engage sometimes but you always knew when it went.

A bunch of us went to the sand dunes last year and my buddy in his F250 4x4 pulling a 33' toyhauler buried the truck to the frame because he had a faulty relay. Dash indicators said he was in 4wd but he wasn't. I would gladly take a manual TC over electronic any day.
