this is my first thread since my new member post. my new tacoma (09 4 cyl manual access cab) stutters slightly before the engine turns over. this is my first toyota, first manual trans, first 4 cyl, so im not sure if this is normal or if it is a starter issue. i thought nothing of it but my dad pointed it out the first time he rode in it. the truck is six weeks old, has done this from day one. thanks.

I wouldn't worry to much my wife's truck does the same thing, not so much during the start but shutdown, the last second or two as everything comes to complete stop the drivetrain shakes. I've watched the shifter move back and forth, the whole cab has a slight shutter. It's a BIG 4 banger, all the balance shafts and counterweights in the engine are designed to keep things smooth while the truck is running. These components need to be rotating to work, so certain times like start/shutdown you'll feel some shake.

I don't think it's anything out of the ordinary. My 08 5-speed 4cyl does the same thing at start and shutdown. Unless there's an unusual sound or it shakes really really bad it shouldn't be an issue.

Find my 09 takes several turns to start. Runs smooth once it fires.
Still getting used to holding the key so long for it to fire up.
Hot or cold engine is the same.

No issues with how it runs after startup, or shuts down.

Mine does it also. Also have more valve train noise at idle than I am use to on Toyota 4 cylinders.
