Passenger side diff. seal still leaking - 3rd change????

    1. Changed my CV axles and afterwards, the passenger's side started leaking.
    2. Took it apart and changed the seal and it still leaked.
    3. Opened it up and re-seated the seal so that it was flush with diff. housing and it still leaked.
    4. Changed the seal again. This time put it on the axle and then inserted the axle into the housing.

    STILL LEAKING.

    Should I glue it in with something? RTV silicone?

    I am using factory OE seals.

    I've also found it fairly easy to move in and out of the diff. I can pull it out with my hand and can put it in without the use of a rubber mallet. I had the understanding that it should be a bit more snug than it is. Is that true?

    It's also very easy to push the seal in too far. There is no lip or anything in the diff that catches this thing and prevents it from seating in too far. Very silly design.

    should be snug and not easy to pull out with your finger. you got the right part? part guys make mistakes all the time

    99 Taco, V6 4x4.. Passenger side. I've received part 90311-47013 from 2 different dealerships.

    Also saw it listed on the forums as that number.

    It's a little snug, but I can push it in beyond flush with just the palm of my hand and can get two fingers on it and yank it out. Harder to calibrate its depth with just hands, but when i put it in i thought: "that ain't gonna keep the oil in".

    Not a common problem that I am aware of .
    If you remove the seal and look at the housing where the seal fits , does it look like the seal has been spinning ?
    The diff needs to be filled up after install to lubricate the seal .
    Did someone swap out the diff before you owned the truck with a different part number ?
    Installing a seal by hand will not work . The seal needs to be press fit or a good amount of force to install it .Something is incorrect or wore out . Without looking at the diff , thats my guess

    A quick fix ... add a bunch of locktite to the outer portion of the seal , then install it letting it sit for 24 hours before you install the axle . May get you back up and running but something is incorrect with your set up

    It doesn't look like it's been spinning.
    I fill the diff up after install.
    I'm pretty sure the diff is stock. The gearing on the truck matches the door sticker and there are no signs of a replace at the diff.

    I'm not sure why these seals don't require press fitting. They're close. They move a little like a stuck drawer. But not stuck enough to seal.

    I'm pretty sure the axles I replaced were the original stock axles. They were toyota with the green casing. The only reason I had to replace them was that the rubber boots were so old they broke away at the clamps.

    Loctite might work. Someone else said RTV. But something like that should do the trick.

    Yea..you shouldn't be able to push it in and out at all with your hands. Should take tapping with a large socket and hammer to get in at all.

    I got mine from Napa and worked great. But my OEM one i bought first to replace with was very snug too.

    hmm. that's weird. i'm pretty sure the diff is the stock one so all it could be is the wrong part number. there's no sign of damage at the diff. and yet the opening is slightly too large for the seal. Again, the part number I got was 90311-47013. I'll check on it.

    Make sure your not getting a driver's side seal maybe..

    Do you have a micrometer to measure the seal before you install it ?
    I doubt RTV will hold in a loose seal , possibly JB weld or a red lock tite

    dude the same dam thing happened to me. i literally changed it 4 times new seals every time, and second i would put it all together and test it, oil would POUR out. its like... WTF!

    my problem was i was putting in the seal too far, like you said can happen.
    also, the seal should not be able to be pulled out by hand, id go to the dealer and get a oem seal.

    and about your seal being easy to put in and out... you can try locktight... idk... maybe the oem wont do that..

    what id do if i was you, insert the seal into the diff, slightly. do not put in flush with the outside of the diff yet, but in enough to hold the seal there.
    once you do that, then put the axle in, and it should put the seal in at the exact correct depth.

    and about your seal being easy to put in and out... you can try locktight... idk... maybe the oem wont do that..

    im not sure if its different with 2nd gens. but i know for on 1st gens if you just installed a new seal on the passenger side and it started leaking right away, 2 things could have happened. you wither fucked up the seal putting it in, or you put the seal in too far making it so the cv axle doesnt sit flush against the seal.

    you know, i thought i had it fixed. i had re-installed it by putting it on the axle first, and then installing the axle. it seemed to have worked for a month or so. but i checked just last week and there is a bead or oil collecting. i'm gonna use rtv next. i don't get it.

    if its just a bead of oil collecting im sure your fine.

    so its only a couple drops a day? if it is i would not worry about it.

    it could be your cv axle if your going through them that fast
