I have a 2004 toyota tacoma sr5. I noticed when I am going up hill or even on a straight away onto the highway I hear a crackle right before I reach 3000 rpms and the car automatically shifts (it's automatic) It's not an popping its more of a rattling noise. Thinking its with the exhaust, but not sure. Thank for your time

That sounds like detonation form your engine (pinging). i am not familiar with exactly how things work on Tacomas (just joined the club) but in many/most cars the ecu retards the timing of the engine just before the automatic shifts. This decreases the power/torque running through the transmission to lesson the stress on it while shifting, and often creates some slight detonation/pinging

I doubt that this effect should be very noticeable, so there may be something else going on. If your tranny is taking a long time to shift (extending the period of retarded timing), perhaps a fluid change is in order. You might also consider the standard tune-up items - plugs, wires, coils? as if these are worn they may make this issue worse.

Perhaps others with more experience can provide additional insight.

Try an higher octane fuel to start with. Also check cat heat shield, it could be rattling.
