I recently bought an 04 4x4 with 85,000 miles. The trans shifts fine, but in all but the highest gear, there is a whining sound which seems to come from the trans. It is most noticeable in first gear. Any ideas out there? Thanks.

Nothing on it .... FOR THE MOMENT
i have a manual transmission and i hear a whine too , maybe this is your power steering pump .

keep your transmission in neutral , spin the rpm slowly , if the sound increase i think this is your power steering pump and not the tranmission

Check your trans fluid... Could be low.
