Is it normal to feel engine braking when in D on the auto trans? I thought there was supposed to be no engine braking when in overdrive to maximize efficiency, but there is definitely more deceleration when taking my foot off the gas with it in D vs. popping it into neutral as I take my foot off the gas.

Just wondering if this is normal. I feel like I could get better fuel economy if the truck would coast farther when not under power. I get just above 16 MPG all city driving.

Even when the vehicle is decelerating (the accelerator pedal is released), the flex lock-up clutch control
operates. Therefore, fuel-cut area of the engine has been expanded and fuel-economy has been improved

I beleive what Toyota is saying is that you do have engine breaking in overdrive but may feel the injectors turning off while your foot is off the accelerator . They keep the torque converter locked on decel and turn the injectors off . I feel this in my truck as well . Older vehicles didnt turn the injectors off so you fealt like you were rolling longer and we became familair with that nice long coast . Thats how it seems to me

Cool. I suspected it was normal, just wanted to see if others experienced the same. Thanks for the replies.
