What is the coldest it has been and you were able to start your Tacoma without it being plugged in? Not chill factor but actual temperature. And what weight oil were you using in the crank case?

Should mention the trick with these trucks is to turn the key to the second position so the dash lights light up. Wait 5 - 10 seconds then start. This lets the fuel pump prime

In normal combustion airplanes, owners manual tells us not to cold start below +40F. So we pre-heat to get the oil temp up to that point. Most of the wear occurs during cold start. I have not taken delivery of my 2014 yet, but will see what the owners manual says about that.

Yeah, doesn't seem like it would be an issue but in air cooled aircraft engines it has been thoroughly looked at. The point is that we warm the engine up to 40 prior to turning over the prop. There are various engine preheaters on the market, such as the tanis (http://www.tanisaircraft.com/).

A modern gas engine should have no issue starting at -50 in good shape. My diesel VW would start at -30 it was not real happy about it but it would start.

I used to own a VW(running full synthetic) and when it -30C with -40C wind chills. I was hoping somedays my car wouldn't start either, it did though.

I wish that I could agree that a modern engine should have no problems starting in -50C/F. Come and spend a winter on the Prairie's and don't run any synthetic and you'll see how hard winters are on engines, modern or not.

Long as you use a 0w oil no issue. I used the stock 10 and it would need to fully warm up to run otherwise it would hesitate and have low power

this is not an air cooled aircraft engine... its a toyota pickup truck... just start it up.

cold soaked to -15F for me. both my yota' and my former V8 Explorer that lasted for 225,000 miles with no preheater under the same conditions.

Wow! So the actual temperature, not wind chill, was -46C (-50.8F) and the Tacoma started without being plugged in with non synthetic oil?
I would never have though any vehicle would start in that kind of environment without being preheated and especially without synthetic oil. Toyota should pay for that kind of advertising.
