So I'm finally gonna build a bed rack. I think they look awesome! It will be made out of 1 1/4" square pipe. The L-shape brackets will be held on the the truck utilizing the factory bed rail. My biggest concern is the hieght that I want it to be. I love the look of the low pro rack where it comes up to the bottom of the rear window. It makes it harder to see if not impossible but it has a great look. I have no real use for a rack other than it looks awesome and I do want to attach my ski rack to it. It's lighter and smaller so I can easily remove it If I have large items to put in the bed. My second option is to make the rack go to the top of the rear window. I will still have visibility and ppl can still see my awesome stickers on my rear window:). Ill have more room in the bed to put everyday stuff in it but on the down fall it's gonna be big!! I don't do any serious off roading but it would be cool to mount a shovel and axe to it to give me that bad ass effect.
What I need from you guys is to help me decide which style rack I should build. The smaller more low pro and practical? Or go all out and build the ultimate assault vehicle?????
Please guys I need all the advise I can get

I think it just depends on what you will use the rack for most often, i.e. lumber or RTT/ camping equipment. A lower profile works great for what I use it for while still keeping the bed useful.

Go big or go home. Or just make a small one and be done with it. :D

    Yeah.
I built mine for a RTT, and I went to the top of the rear window to provide easy access to a couple of Rubbermaid Action Packers in the bed but keep the lowest COG possible, as well as being slightly more aerodynamic. I can also attach a shovel and jack some day, or Rotopaks, or some jerry cans.

i wasnt gonna go higher then the top of the rear window so that when im on the highway the wind doesnt hit it. i will not be using it for RTT or lumber or anything like that. mostly so i can mount my yakima ski rack to it. i mostly want the rack cause they just look so damn cool. im just torn between the 2 different heights.

Build thread in sig... 4-link long travel
build a low profile one, and then build some easily removable, bolt-on extensions that would allow you to mount a kayak overhanging the roof.

Being that you are going to use square stock, I think the shorter one would probably look better.
