I would like to but I don't where any of these things are located since I'm about a 1 or a 2 on a scale of 1-10 (1 = not very knowledgeable about mechanic things). I'll have someone more knowledgeable look into I guess.

I was doing 11-13mpg on the freeway with a small lift and bigger tires. Check your fluids, make sure you have a full radiator and reservoir.

    I found that there's a 3mpg difference between 2400rpm and 2700rpm.

This happened to me as the engine lost compression and destroyed itself. Make sure your radiator is full, my demise was the radiator being empty, and there was very little indication of it.

Take to stealership, have them do a compression test.

Does the compression test cost any money? I'm still under 36,000 miles.

I think compression was the least of you worries man...don't send the guy on a wild goose chase.

If the vehicle is losing power, and shifting into overdrive for slight inclines, it's clear that there's mechanical problems. Three possibilities come to mind:

    1) 02 sensor buring fuel incorrectly will lose power, however, not sure if it'll be that much, but it could explain the MPG
    2) Engine
    3) Transmission slipping

Dealership should be able to iron it out, since it's so low miles. I didn't tell him to go on a goose chase, I just informed him of my past and what the cause was - with similar symptoms -- loss of power, engine issues.

Now what caused my engine issues is a different story, and I hope no-one else falls victim to it.

To tim920 I wouldn't walk into the dealership asking for a compression check. Just like when you go to the doctor, let the mechanic determine the symptoms and diagnose the problem.

I definitely think somethings up with the OP's truck. I got about 11-13 mpg in the dead of winter. The truck idled at least twice for 15-25 minutes each time, it was in 4wd, and it was -40F. Even after two years of ownership and 22k miles, i still got about 20mpg around town.

Sorry to hear of your issue, hopefully it gets resolved.

i hate to add to this but i too am having the same problems it seems. i'll admit i do have a little bit of a lead foot sometimes but i am getting around 13-14 mpg. When i got the truck new i was at about 19-20. But here is the baffling part for me...it only has 1500 miles on it. Why such a drop? All my fluids are fine and everything is pretty much brand new!! Could it be a calibration issue? How hard is it for the dealership to determine that something is wrong with an O2 sensor or something like that? Oh, and i am running 91 octane, the highest available around here.

ive got the same problem as you guys. Not quite as bad, however i dont live in the snow and my winters here on the coast of cali dont get any colder than the summers. But right now its summer and im still getting 13-14 mpg. I have a Borla Cat Back Exhaust, Airaid CAI, Unichip, off road tires, no lift yet, and im running the chip on the first mapping. I have tired running premium gas as opposed to 89 but didnt see any change in the mpg. I am running full synthetic oil. Any ideas? i was thinking maybe send the chip to get re mapped for the updated specs. And my air filter does look a little dirty, could cleaning and oiling make that much of a difference though, some guys are getting 18 with lift and tires, i just dont see a dirty air filter causing 4 mpg loss. And i remember reading that people are unplugging the battery for 30 min, what does that do?

You should be at 70 mph when rpm is at 2000. That's what my 2011 TRD Taco used to do. But still not good enough fo me. That's why I sold it.

I've found that you get more miles per dollar using premium fuel. Put 91 octane in it. You'll get more HP, more torque, more MPG, more miles per dollar as opposed to 85 octane.

CAI's cause loss of MPG... More air more fuel. Had same problem on a Silverado. Lost 5 mpg by installing a CAI. O2 sensor other cause. Faulty computer?

Ok, I see this, so that negates my post above. All I can say is I hope I don't run into the same problem. I've heard my mechanic buddy say these new ECU's have in his words "a learning problem". The new trucks are rated LEV, so maybe Toyota tried to get too fancy with the electronics???

    Only on the V6.
The 2.7 does not compensate for the higher octane.

As for the V6 being more economical, it's pretty close to being a wash. Use less fuel, pay more for it... cost per mile is the same, some report more with premium, but still run it due to the improved throttle response.

I have less than 1400 miles on my new Tacoma (590 were test drive miles at the dealer) and have filled it twice now ... first tank was 18.43 MPG and second tank was 18.24. For a new Truck and the majority of the miles being in and around town I am not at all disappointed. I don't race away from stop lights, drive reasonably easy on the accelerator and coast down to stops. Thanksgiving week I will take a road trip and I am looking forward to seeing what it does. Previous truck was a Dakota and not once did I ever get better than 16.5 and that was a highway trip.
