I have 156k miles and I'm looking to hit at least 300k in this truck. I change the oil and spark plugs myself and haven't taken the truck to a shop in a while. I have the oil analyzed by Blackstone labs to track for particulate or other signs of wear, and so far so good. I also consistently get about 24 miles per gallon with no recent changes. There is no indication of any trouble with the truck.

    2000 Tacoma SR5
    4 cylinder, 2wd
    2RZ-FE engine
    Modified air box, otherwise stock

I have heard I should have my timing chain and water pump changed. What else?

    Check your owners manual.......

I don't know the specifics with your 2WD VS what I'm used to, but here's a run-down of things to think about:

    Driveshaft / Ujoint lubrication
    Differential - Oil change
    Fuel filter
    Radiator flush & refill
    Water pump
    Change thermostat
    Steering system flush & fill
    Brake fluid bleed/fill
    Brake caliper lubrication/pads/rotors
    Rear brake inspection/cleaning/lubrication
    Spark plugs / wires / ?
Steering rack inspection / bushing replacement ??
    A/C idler bearing inspection
    Alternator / charging system inspection
    A/C inspection
    Wheel bearings/balljoint inspections

You not sure if you have a timing chain or belt? well I would guess that at 156k miles it's safe to say it has a chain cause most timing belts only last about 100k miles.

I don't think you need to mess with the timing chain until 350k-400k miles. Congrats on going that many miles on your truck, how many times have you change out the tranny fluid?

Forgot to mention that I did have the differential fluid and transmission fluid replaced early this year, approximately 140k miles. The truck had 70k when I bought it in 2008.

Thanks for the replies so far. That is a long list of items to think about. What should be considered priorities? For example, I am motivated to replace the timing chain because I hear it will destroy the engine if it breaks. While in there, may as well do the water pump and thermostat.

the four cylinders definitely have a chain

at that mileage I would not be concerned about changing the timing chain unless regular oil changes were not done.

The chains last a long time, and unless you hear chain slap, you should be ok....at least that's the way it used to be in the older Toyota four cylinder trucks.

personally I expect to go 200k before even considering a timing chain replacement. I do change the oil regularly and use synthetic

anyone else out there have an opinion on this?
