Interesting. I sold an SUV to them a couple of years ago and got almost double what I was expecting.

Carmax is very hit and miss with their values. I remember years ago they were practically giving away C5 Z06s compared to what they were really worth. I've personally bought and sold one car from them. I sold my 2010 Dodge 1500 to them and ended up making $4,000 on the deal. Granted, I had a fantastic hook up when I bought it.

I agree with the F CarMax statements. I'm not a fan of them at all. However, I did sell them an 01 Chevy Tahoe 4wd that was fully loaded, 5 years old w/ 50K on the od, and they gave me a very good price for it. I could have gotten just a tad more selling it myself, but was too busy at the time and I decided the difference was worth it.

Like mentioned, I think they are probably hit and miss at best.

Sold a Jeep there and got a fair price, nothing special but right about what I was expecting. I think the hit or miss comments are spot on. A lot of people will probably sacrifice a little cash for the speed and convenience of it.

Carmax isn't special, most any used car dealer will buy a car from you. Couple of years ago I wanted to get rid of a truck. I drove down the road stopping in at all of the used car places and told them I just wanted to sell the truck. They'd give me a price and then I'd drive a bit further to the next place and do it all over again. A couple of places weren't interested, but most gave me a price. When it was all said and done the bids were within a $200 dollars. All of the bids were wholesale so don't think they are going to give you retail prices.

What I ended up doing was trading it in on a new Jeep. Because I'd done my homework I knew the trade-in price the dealer gave me was fair. Also, because in my state you only pay sales tax on the difference between the trade and the new vehicle it made financial sense to do the trade. (It would have been even better financially to sell it myself, but I hated that :censored: GMC with a passion normally reserved for politicians and lawyers. It was just better for my blood pressure to have it out of my life.)

My experience with craigslist is people getting a hold of me acting like they are real interested then not showing up at scheduled time. Happened to me last week. The "guy" exchanged about 5 emails with me set up a time to meet and he never showed, never called, never emailed back..

IMO craigslist is for cars 5k and under .

Ive had lots of interest from ebay and cars.com on my truck but no offers good enough to persuade me to sell. Think im going to just hang onto the truck .

Others ive talked to use carmax and last resort on getting rid of a car they cant sell privately. But I hear they low ball pretty hard in my area .

I had good luck with selling my 2010 Nissan 370z 40th anniversary edition to them, got WAY more than the dealer wanted to do on a trade and didn't have to deal with the hassle of a private party sale. Also more bargaining power with the dealer as I wasn't trading anything in. Still got hosed though, $43k new, carmax got it for $29k with only 13,000 miles.

you can not go by Bluebook or Nada prices, car dealers use black book prices. banks use these but Edmunds and now some dealers use Auto Trader are close to real world numbers. Craigslist has to many scammers and low ballers, unless they bring cash i would not take any kind of ceritied or cashiers check without cashing at the bank it was drawn on. i would not buy a vehicle off Ebay or sell one either. have to decide how much of a hassle it is to sell one yourself is worth. if they bring cash better have one of those to chech the bills.
