I'm coming from a 1990 isuzu pickup, but that was in college and now I have a great job. Can pay cash for a tacoma by next paycheck but going to finance to build credit. I have thought about used, but it seems like you only save so little, and 10 year old tacos are only 10-12k cheaper than new. In 10 years of driving my tacoma-to-be, I don't think I will be fretting over 10k-12k lost.

I have never purchased from a dealer, but did some test drives and can tell they are desperate to make a sale. What should I be paying for an SR Access cab 4x4? My local dealer has two that I'm interested in, both automatic, one I4 one V6. I don't care too much either way, and resale value is most important. I hear resale value of double cab is higher % retained, but I'm not crazy about the look nor the price hike.

Both the I4 and V6 are 28.5k, I think the I4 must have some more features which I don't even notice. What can I expect to get the dealer down to? It's unfortunate that they don't have the base I4 or V6 access cab manual which I built online for much cheaper.

Honestly, I have an access cab and if this car hadn't basically been given to me I would have bought a double cab.

With that being said, if you are buying new, get the car you want. If you want a base and they don't have it, order it or have them find one for you. Buying new means you can get whatever you want, you may just have to wait a bit.

Do you think I will get more wiggle room on the price buying off the lot though? I don't mind the extra features if I can get them for free or cheap. While I feel like if they ordered what I wanted exactly they might be less negotiable.

You should be able to buy a tacoma msrp 28.5 for around 26.5 (plus doc fee and tax/title) with a little bit of negotiating. They may not go for it the first time you are in the dealership. That's ok. Just call or email back a day later or so saying that you are going to continue getting quotes from other dealers but that you would buy it from them for that price. I have gotten better deals -- close to 3k off msrp, but it required weeks of email haggling and good timeing. I just bought a 14 and didn't want to go through all that again, so ended up at around 2k off sticker. There is a big difference among dealers and regions though. Also, some dealers will give you a great deal on the new truck, but then offer you a couple thousand less on your trade to make up the difference.

I too think the double cabs look worse than the access cabs, but bought a double cab anyway. I don't have kids, but if I did in the next 10 years I don't want to deal with buying another truck. Also, the dog likes that the back windows go down.

I tested the i4 auto and didn't really like it. felt like I had the pedal to the floor all the time. I have a v6 auto and it feels great to drive. Everyone here will tell you to get exactly what you want the first time. Its better to spend the money now than to find that the truck doesn't suit your needs and have to take a hit trading it in down the road.

If you live in bum fuck nowhere you might have less wiggle room but if you live close to multiple dealerships I would get exactly what I wanted and negotiate. If you are buying used and they have exactly what you want they kind of have you holding your ankles but since you are buying new you can go to any dealership and get the truck you want. Remember, they are lucky to have your business, make them earn it.

This is good info. I work offshore and am on break right now, so arguing and walking out of the dealership multiple times wouldn't be such a bad way to spend my time until the ski mountain opens here :)

Also would you recommend negotiating financing or price first? Because if they finance me through toyota they could just stick a higher interest rate on me and get back another 1k or so. And I'm a first time buyer, just tried to get a loan through my local credit union and got turned down because my credit is just a blank slate. Only thing I got going for me is a high income with no debt, tempting to pay cash but I need this credit so I can stop renting.

Go to your local credit union and get rates from them as well as local banks, get pre approved for the amount you want to finance. They are almost always a lower rate and you find out your credit score-if the finance manager is dishonest they will try to sell you a higher rate by saying you have a bad score.

I recently purchased a new vehicle and did 90% of the haggling on the internet. I emailed tons of dealers in my area, let them know I was serious and had them give me their best offer. Time is valuable and this method saved me tons of time. When I got the price to where I wanted I called the dealership and set up a time to purchase the car.

If you have a trade, don't mention it until you negotiate the price of the new car. Once you have negotiated the new car price THEN you negotiate the trade in price. DO NOT negotiate them together, they will fuck you, I promise.
