Hey guys and gals, on my way home last night a big gust of wind blew over a dead tree and blocked the right lane. I have a chain on the truck and went to drag it out of the road. As I looked under the rear of the truck, which is a base 4x4 without a tow package, I realized there really isn't a good factory tow/recovery point back there.

My question to you is, what do you use for recovery/tow points out back?

I am not looking to get a new super awesome, all-steel, off road bumper, it's just not in the budget. I do not tow anything so I don't really need a trailer hitch either. However, would a trailer hitch be the best option, since if I ever needed to tow something, I could?

I'm open to any and all suggestions. Links and pics are always welcome! Thanks.

A trailer hitch (Class II) is probably your best bet..... Get yourself a draw bar (without ball) and a D-ring......

    D-ring like this:

Or, you can buy these (could be more expensive)

If you get a tow strap/recovery strap - make sure its wide enough for such loads (ratings) AND with hoops on the ends (NO HOOKS). I'm sure there's other threads on here for tow strap/recover strap choices.

Yeah, thats what I did. Fortunately it was a small enough tree I could drag it with the front.

    Thanks

I'm not sure if there is any truth to this, but I heard you can blow up your transmission trying to pull heavy loads in reverse. Does anyone know if thats true?

What exactly is a 'heavy load'??

We must remember - regardless of reverse or forward, towing or recovery..... that we must not exceed the towing capacity of the truck.

While its certainly possible to shockload any drivetrain component and break gear teeth / planetaries / shafts while pulling or dragging, reverse is no more susceptible to damage.
