Hey, having a little problem with my double cab six speed tacoma. It pops out of 2nd gear only when downshifting unless im going at a snails pace like maybe around 5 mph. However shifting from second to first it works perfectly fine.
Anyone have any advice on what i should do for it?

Sounds like a worn out syncro in the transmission.

My guess would be end play issues within the transmission . Under torque ,the helical gearing in the transmission is forced to the rear of the transmission casing . Under decel , the helical gearing forces the torque load to the front of the transmission . Combine the helical gearing torque issue with a wore out synchronizer shift fork and you get popping out of gear .Over time the alluminum shift forks wear out because they are always in contact with the synchronizer hub .

How sloppy is your shifter ? If you have a bunch of play in the shifter , you could possibly buy some time by replacing the shifter bushing or by holding the shifter in place by hand .
Lot of guys on this forum have replaced the shifter bushing . Thats the cheapest thing to try first .
    mileage ?

ok so really weird story... Went to replace the shifter ring i think it is called and when taking out the center console i found one just laying there next to a washer, and then when i took out the shifter lever there was a really messed up ring at the bottom one side just completely disfigured. So i put the one i found laying there in and now it grinds in 2nd and third gear, there is a little humming and it pops out of second.
I dont see how you could put this ring in wrong it just sits there any advice?

My 4runner had similar issues and the shifter seat fixed it. The old one was all mangled in there. Be sure you got it all out so that the new one sits flat in there. Mine was broken to pieces so I had to pick them out with a tweezer. Did you replace the cup on the shifter too? I did them at the same time, but wasnt getting pop out problems, just loose shifting with occasional grinds and that fixed it for me. Pretty obvious but make sure it's installed right with the curved part up to fit with the shifter ball cup thing.

Ya the flat side was down with the notched side pointed up, im not sure why installing a better one would all of a sudden make it worse.. It's dark here now though so once i can see better tomorrow in the AM ill look it all over again.
