    2001 Extended Cab
    Hello all,

My 2001 extended cab Tacoma was the most dependable vehicle I have ever owned (until an old GF rolled it into a riverbed a few years ago).

Well, it's time for a new light truck. I am considering a 2014 regular cab 5spd manual 4x4. I haven't kept up on media and rumors related to Tacomas.

To all the owners of second gen Tacomas-- How will it compare to my experience with a first gen? Is this a good time to buy? What do I need to watch out for? What are your general thoughts on this model year vs. previous 2nd gen model years? Am I making the right choice with a new 2014?

    Thanks for thoughts and feedback.

It won't be as reliable...the electronic 4x4 stuff is garbage. That said, if you don't mind fixing a few weak points they are a very nice truck. Personally, the new ones have too much electronic crap and if I was in the market for another one I would look for a clean 2003-2004 with the 3.4 and automatic trans. I think those were among the most reliable rigs toyota has ever made, second only to the 1985 pickup. On the other hand, if you are going to let some chick drive it, the new ones have so many gizmos that will rescue an inexperienced driver that she might not have rolled a new one. I hate to say it, but the electronic traction control works pretty good. I disabled all of that myself, but I'm a pretty good wheel monkey.

I have an 09, reg. cab, 4x4, 5 speed and I love it. I traded in my 97 5 lug with 217K miles on it. I love my new truck! Yes my 97 was very dependable and over the course of its life asked me for nothing, but I see no reason why my 2nd gen. would be any different. If I were you I would do it, it is a Tacoma and wont let you down.
