This is going to sound real stupid but here goes. I have access to a set of brand new Fox 2.5 Coil-overs with reservoir fronts for the high cost of nothing. I want them but have read about needing new UCA's (something I am not convinced makes putting the Fox's in worth it). I don't do serious off-roading. Most off roading is during hunting season, when I go camping, and the dirt road I take to work every morning when I am in the States. Can someone with experience give me the no-shit skinny on this?

Those coilovers should be adjustable via a threaded collar meaning you can choose how much lift you want to gain. If you set them at a lower setting, you would not need aftermarket upper control arms unless they are extended travel. Extended travel coilovers would require aftermarket UCA's, stock travel coilovers would not. If the shocks are old and spent, you should probably look into getting them rebuilt before you put them on your truck. It would cost roughly around $200 to do so once you factor in shipping costs (unless you can do it yourself or have a local shop that can do it). All in all, if you can get them for free, I'd jump on it. Even if you decide not to use them, you could sell them and make some pretty decent money in the deal.

Thanks for the advice. These shocks are brand new still in the box. Lucky me.

Check my build thread...too much to list.
BRAND NEW?! There would be no question about getting them for free. In the end just buying UCA's you'd still save a lot of money.

A $1000 set of coilovers for free and you're worried about the cost of some UCAs?
I'd do it, no question. They will ride a lot nicer that stock on those dirt roads.

I'd be glad to buy you a new set of 5100's and install them for your NIB Fox's. Then you wouldn't have to buy UCA's.

If the shocks are long travel you have three choices.

    1) Have them shortened by installing the correct spacer.
    2) Run new upper arms.
    3) Have limit straps installed.

The contact would happen at full extension, so a preload change won't prevent contact.

If you make the swap, plan to buy a set of rears to match the fronts, I suspect you will want them after you experience how much better the front becomes.

Idk, I'd think if they had a stiffer coil you might need new UCAs from either the lift the coils give or just from the diameter of them (hitting the stock UCA with a stiff thick coil) and articulation of the front wheels, in any case if you wanted you could sell those fronts and buy a whole lift front to back with the money you get.

Thanks for the information. I knew it was a stupid question but wanted to know what I was getting into if I decided to go with them. I think I am going to run them with the stock UCA's at the same height my truck is now (Toytec 2.5" spacer) and see how they ride.

Got my coilovers and new Total Chaos UCAs installed today. Thanks to everyone who has posted a guide on UCA replacement. Without them I would have been lost. Been a productive weekend with new stereo install and now new UCA and coil overs. Next up: install my TRS retrofit that showed up last week. Also, pittman puller is a must to break lose tie rod ends and seperate UCA from spindle quickly.

Only took them around the block to make sure nothing fell off and then to re-torque. They seemed a little more "bouncy" and increased both sides about 2.5 inches from where the truck sat with a ToyTec spacers. They look mean though.

I run foxes all around and TCs and love them. They were a little stiff when new but after driving they are awesome!

Just got back from playing in the snow and driving over some nice bumps and whoops and I love 'em more every time I take the truck out. :)

    Congrats on the free shit!

How is it worthless without pictures? There are numerous threads on here of 2nd Gen Tacoma with Fox Shocks and Total Chaos Uppers. It's not a how-to thread; just me closing up a discussion I started this summer while deployed.
