Greetings all - I'm the proud owner of a 2009 Tacoma sport with 17" stock wheels and I have a question about backspace and spacers.

The background: I had Bilstein 5100 adjustables installed on the front end - on the highest setting for 2.5" of lift apparently. At the same time we installed 285/70/17 Falken Wildpeaks with 1" spacers to stop the rub on the control arm. It's tight in my wheel wells but it works without rubbing on the control arm.

Now I'm in position to buy new wheels and my main goal is to eliminate the spacers. My son put the same brand spacers on his truck at the same time and he's had nothing but problems with breaking studs and a 40mph wobble which went away when he took them off. I've got a wobble at 60mph and I've had the tire guys try to rebalance the wheels twice so I think it's the spacers but I can't take them off without the rub so I'm stuck.

So my long-winded question is - does anyone know the stock backspace on this vehicle and what would be the best way to know if an advertised backspace of a new wheel would allow me to get rid of the spacers?

    Thanks in advance!
    Tommy

To give you an idea of how much 4.5 BS sticks out. More than enough clearance for your ucas.

Thanks for the responses and picture Fluffym. I'm gonna go read through that link as well.

Beavis I bought both sets (my son's and mine) on Ebay from seller
    Easywheel .

Probably should not have shopped on price for something that important but what's done is done I guess. I'd like to get to the place where spacers aren't needed at all.

Do you know if they are hub centric?

    Sorry I'm kind of a noob - I don't understand the question.

Good question I don't really have an answer for other than I see it as one more part to potentially cause problems - and I'm worrying about the quality of the ones I have. In my way of thinking I'd rather have a high quality wheel that accomplishes the same thing.

Like Beavis0076 stated, go with a better quality proven spacers like spidertrax which are hub centric. Hub centric spacers have a raised lip around the center that your stock wheels sits on. Lug centric spacers does not have the raised lip and your stock wheels and truck weight rests on the lugs. They tend to increase chance for vibes since you have to be more precise during the install. Pic below are spidertrax wheel hub centric spacers : note the raised lip in the center opening.

I have another vote for spidertrax. Cheaper than new wheels and I've had mine on for 15000 miles with zero issues.

Totally agree with QUALITY over price point with spacers...

Spidertrax and Bora seem to be the top 2 and my Boras have been trouble free for over a year plus....

I basically "Check" torque with each tire rotation and they have not moved/needed attention...

My needs were for upgrading to 2nd Gen. TRD wheels with LT tires on my '02 1st Gen and these work exactly as promised....gave my UCA's breathing room and me a trouble free way to run my "New" tire/wheel combo...

Awesome visual Wattapunk - that makes total sense now.

Thanks for all the responses - I wish I had come here BEFORE I started on this.
