I'm trying to figure out the best weapon to stow in my truck and in my wife's truck for personal protection. Besides a gun. What do you recommend?

Only $10 or so, lightweight, good for cutting flesh, not that durable for cutting brush. :D

Pepper spray/mace. Before this past Summer I might have said something else. But I ended getting a small whiff of Bear Spray that wafted on a slight breeze after deployment; had me and two others coughing, spitting red mucus and moving away from it rapidly. And that was just a small whiff. I used to doubt it's effectiveness; not any more and I damn sure would not volunteer to take a full shot of it in the face.

Mace is a bad idea for personal protection...as you've already stated.

If you spray it, everyone in the vicinity gets a dose...including you! Imagine what happens in a confined space (such as your truck)...not to mention anything it gets on must be trashed as it doesn't wash out too well (want to replace your truck/interior?)

If you must have such a product, get the gel version...

Mag-Light makes for an effective baton, you can even mount it on the side of your seat for easy access

I agree, unless you have experience fighting/performing self defence in it, dont use it, it likes to linger in the air, and if you spray it and the wind decides to pick up, thats a bad day for you. Plus you have to worry a little about the hydraulic needle effect.

Direct close-range spray can cause more serious eye irritation by attacking the cornea with a concentrated stream of liquid (the so-called "hydraulic needle" effect). Some brands have addressed this problem by means of an elliptically cone-shaped spray pattern.

    ^^^from wiki^^^

Basically the same idea as pointing a pressure washer at the dirt...high pressure/concentrated streams of liquids dig holes in soft things

Kind of a moot point in personal self defense, more of a concern for law enforcement liability in todays litigious society
