    Yup, someone gets it!

The other likelihoods are that companies now having to pay more will try to do more with less..such as hire more part-time workers to not have to pay benefits, more vacation time, 401k, et al.

They will also try to get more production from all their workers, be more picky about who they hire, and probably not give bonuses (if they currently do).

As I mentioned before, I do agree that people not making enough to meet basic needs is sad. That said, we all can't make a fortune. The world needs people to dig ditches just like it needs doctors.

In only a couple of states. Inflation has been flat for the last few years anyway, so there would be no increase if it were. Every increase is done by politicians.

And the increases are why McDonald's doesn't have teenagers anymore, but is full of people much too old for this to be the beginning of their career. The teenagers can't find jobs. Minimum wage jobs are for unskilled workers to start somewhere. At $15/hour, you want people with multiple years of customer-facing experience. Not people with zero experience.

I suppose a lot of young people are working at Starbucks these days, where they get lifestyle benefits with their free drink each day.

Still, if you try to force a business to double its labor costs, then it will 1) close, 2) raise prices, 3) hire more experienced, more efficient people, 4) downsize to stay below the 50-employee cap if they are close to it, or 5) replace people with technology.

Any fast food restaurant could replace its order-takers with an iPhone app. It would be a lot easier on the customer too, as we would get our order correct consistently. Such an app could reduce staffing needs by 1/3, almost offsetting the increase.

But then again, raising the minimum wage is never designed to help the unskilled. Living wage laws like those in Santa Monica have an exception for collective bargaining agreements. So, step 1 is to raise the minimum from $9 to $15. Step to is for the union to go back to the employer and say, "If you let us unionize your workforce, we'll endorse a contract for just $10/hour." Company gets a lower labor cost increase, and employees get pushed into a union where they can pay dues.

Interestingly, OSHA started in 1970, so it wasn't in the last 35 years.

It also means that many members of management - and senior management - were born after OSHA already existed. They've never known a time where there wasn't a regulatory requirement for management to care about safety.

Management theory has changed a lot in the 100 years since unions were strongest. Part of the reasons unions have declined so much is that management at younger non-union companies adopted safety practices and things like progressive discipline to keep things from being arbitrary. Companies like Wal-Mart and cable companies, like tech companies, let everyone buy stock. People make a lot of money with those equity investments - some of them far more than they'd ever make with salary.

I know a guy who works at a local Toyota facility (warehouse). Their safety and discipline policies are very enlightened. If an employee has an incident, they are expected to report it. They get the rest of the day to participate in the investigation. Their peer safety leader and management, etc., conducts the investigation immediately. If the employee did something wrong, they are not disciplined, they are retrained. These are non-union facilities with Japanese management styles.

However, someone who hides an incident and fails to report it faces immediate termination.

So, they create a culture of reporting and participating to make things safer. Anyone who doesn't want to play by those rules is shown the door.
