Idea, a possible way to boot up your stereo before going to your truck?

First post! I have been lurking for a few years now. Thanks to everyone for all the help I got while lurking. I had an idea this morning and wanted to see if this has been done before. I did a search and found only timers to keep the radio on after taking out the key. This would turn the radio on from inside the house or office before going outside. Anyway, here is my idea. I ordered a Kenwood DNN990HD NAV system for my 2012 truck this week. There is one thing about it I do not like. From what I have read it will take a minute or two to boot up. This sounds like a common problem with new aftermarket units I looked into. I want to ask has anyone tried to use a timer relay to apply temporary power to the head unit only. I mean before going to get in the truck. I got the idea to use the keychain alarm to do this. I sometimes check to see if I remembered to set my alarm from the second story window at the office. I also do this sometimes before going to bed at night from inside the house. Yea I am getting old here. So this works for me over a good distance and through some walls. So if the keychain alarm operator is a pulse signal to the alarm system hardware. Then maybe a tap into it with an off delay timer could apply temporary power to the head unit, for say 1 to 10 minutes? The pulse would power the relay on. A normally open contact on the relay would hold it in for whatever time the relay is set to. When the relay drops out it would take the temp power out of the circuit. As long as the truck is started before the timer drops out, the head unit would stay booted up and working when you get in the truck. I do not know how the key chain alarm circuit works. It needs to be a pulsed signal so the relay does not draw power when circuit is not in use. Maybe somebody here knows about the alarm wiring? I did a sketch of a possible circuit here. I show a circuit on / off switch. If the truck was to sit a while this would make sure the relay did not draw down the battery.

If the alarm would not work maybe something like this would? Not good from a distance but maybe it would work with the truck in driveway?

This is just an idea I had today.

Disclaimer - I do not claim to know anything about anything. So if this makes your truck explode and wipe out your neighborhood, do not blame me.

Thought about this. It would need to be the Bluetooth option. I would not want the head unit to come on when setting the alarm for the night.

With my aftermarket head unit, if its on when the truck is off (like when I only turn the key to the ACC position) and then I turn the truck on, the head unit powers off and then powers on again. And then it has to go through the same start up cycle. Perhaps wiring the head unit the way you're thinking would not require the head unit to turn off and back on; I don't know. You could always install a remote start. That way, by the time you get in your truck your radio is ready to go and the cabin temperature is just right!

    Riverdog,
I had thought about that when thinking it through. The circuit as drawn would be direct off the battery. It would not cycle when you start the truck. I thought about this some more last night and drew a different diagram. I wanted a way to do it without the alarm. I found this Bluetooth controller last night and show it in the diagram.

I have not yet found a timer relay like I want. I want one fairly small with two contacts. One to latch in the relay & one to power the head unit off the battery. I would like to find a true off delay capacitor powered relay. Then I would only need one contact. I guess I could add a regular 2 pole relay and operate it with the single contact timer. But it would be better to find a 2 pole timer as space is limited. There are several ways to do this. It depends on what relays and remotes I can find to work with. I have been looking for small and cheap! I wish I had the complete set of wiring diagrams for my truck. I am curious if I would cause any problems back feeding anything else doing this.
    Thanks for your input.

Just put a remote start alarm in, and wire your radio turn-on to a true ignition circuit to avoid radio restart when going from acc to starting. That's what I ended up doing to help with my kenwoods annoyingly long boot up time.

Good find Tony. Thanks for sharing that.

Also, if case you might be interested in another head unit.... I have a Sony XAV-601BT that starts up pretty quick. I can't ever remember being annoyed at the length of time it takes to start up.
