Actually, My Gateway desktop I bought in 2008 works fine. Runs games, is up to date, and will probably give me a few more years. As for my one 2009 MBP. Apple has already stopped giving it features in updates. it runs maverics, but lacks certain feature, even though the processor is still worthy, and willing. But I bet the stop support for it in a year or two. I also run a 2012 MBP.

Check Amazon for Asus laptops. A lot of them have the backlit keyboards.

Cool... I didn't know if you already had the software since it is pretty expensive.

Yeah my laptop that just died on me is an Asus x53e I bought a year or two ago. It was a good laptop, it just lacked the backlit keyboard. If it had that option, or a way to buy one and install it i'd probably go with it again.

Office 2013 came in a package deal with one of my college books in a bundle. So I can always re-download it onto the new one.

It's hard to say, there are so many these days. As someone said Check online for asus. their support kind of sucks. but they make a decent product. And if you work at walmart, and just need one for school. check there, plus you get a discount. it's nice to actually see and feel them in person.

for reliability I would look at a solid state drive on your computer but this will break your <$600 that you want to spend. I have a MacBook Pro with retina display. it is EXPENSIVE but i gotta hand it to apple with their reliability, definitely top notch.

Yeah my sister has a MacBook Air. It's nice and all but it's too small for my taste.

Ever look at the Window's Surface? Asus makes very nice tablets as well. Transformers have a second battery in their key board dock but the $$$ is a bit higher.

Was actually just looking at this one. Ironic. http://www.amazon.com/Transformer-T...3721&sr=8-1&keywords=asus+t100#productDetails
The only thing is that it doesn't have the backlit keyboard that I really wanted. But I guess you can't have everything. I especially like how it's 2 in 1

edit: Is the the surface you were talking about?
    http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Sur...id=1386470354&sr=8-2&keywords=windows+surface
It only has 1GHz Processor. That seems kind of low, would that be good for what I need?

That Asus is a great deal.

Don't get too hung up on the CPU speed, they aren't comparable. The Surface uses the Nvidia Tegra processor which combines the CPU (ARM CPU), GPU, etc... onto one die. Its is a very capable package with better video performance than any comparable Intel platform.

The Surface 2 is a bit out of your price range but comes with Nvidia Tegra 4 which is very comparable to the latest Intel and Qualcomm products.

More info on Nvidia's Tegra: http://www.creotix.com/tech/nvidia-tegra-3-vs-tegra-4-comparison/1251/

Out of those two, which would you recommend?

Also was looking at this one.
    http://www.nextag.com/serv/main/buy...+14"+Touch-Screen+Laptop+-+8GB+Memory+-+Black
But it says it's not available for shipping or in-store.. so I can cross that one off I suppose.

Surface 2. Its pricey but its a good investment. Still cant lose with the ASUS.

    A comparison:

    http://tabletrocket.com/tablets/Microsoft-Surface-2-vs-Asus-Transformer-Book-T100

I stay away from Sony. TBH, I generally prefer Asus over everything. Great quality and customer service. However, Ill make an exception. The Window's Surface is a great computer for what it is (don't expect it to be silky smooth). I can only imagine how nice the Surface 2 is.

Yeah but the surface 2 is out of my price range.
So between the first MS Surface and the Asus, which would be better for my uses? Sorry for all of the questions, just trying to make sure I get would be best for me.

I agree. I'm on my second gaming laptop and they (so far) have been perfect.
