Before I get blasted, I've done plenty of forum and google searching.

I have two distinct, independent "clunks" happening with my truck. A little history: I lifted the truck last March (probably put about 8k miles on it since then), ToyTec COs up front set at about 1.75" - 2" of lift. I have a 1.5" AAL in the rear. I have Bilstein shocks in the rear.

    Rear "Clunk:"

History: I just replaced the carrier bearing. I have to come clean up front and admit I haven't lubed the zerks on the driveshaft in a while. Today, I lubed all of the zerks on the driveshaft. The slip yoke had some grease where the two shafts met, so it wasn't dry. However, it did take about 5 or 6 good pumps of grease. It's only started since I removed the driveshaft last week.

Symptoms: It seems worse when the truck is cold. It sounds as if it coming from around the rear end region. It doesn't necessarily sound like it is from one side or the other. I notice it when I'm coasting (in gear or out, doesn't matter which gear). I primarily notice it between 1 and 35 mph. It doesn't do it constantly, but occassionally (10 times on a 15 minute ride). I don't really hear or feel it when I'm braking or when its under load. On occassion, it does happen when I'm braking, but that's only about 10% of the time I hear it. Lastly, it sounds like a metallic clank; like a ball peen smacking the driveshaft or rearend.

I don't believe it is axle wrap. Ninety percent of the time it's while I'm coasting. I also hear it if I hit a pothole or speed bump. I can also take the steering wheel and turn it back and forth (like NASCAR drivers warming up their tires) and it clunks fairly predictably.

    Front "Clunk:"

I read this write-up. My truck definitely has this play.

History: It started immediately after I lifted the truck last March. It has gotten much more noticeable.

Symptoms: If I hit a speed bump, I can hear something in the front end that sounds like a clunk around the shock assembly...both sides. If I hit an angled speed bump, my truck will go "clunk, clunk." I do get feedback in the steering wheels/column but I'm not sure if the above write-up is what my problem is. I'm unsure if I should be hearing the clunk from my steering column or outside of the truck if it is the steering shaft issue.

    Other things I've checked:

Front: Checked all of the bolts on my shocks and shock tower. Even kicked the shock tower. Bounced on the front end, nothing.

Rear: Checked the spare tire carrier, rear shocks and shock bolts, shackle bolts, gas tank bolts, leaf springs, u-bolts, etc...nothing.

    Any help is appreciated.

UPDATE: It was my front sway bar end links that were loose. It made two distinctive sounds in two different scenarios. After pulling an "Ace Ventura" I finally realized the "sound from the rear," was really coming from the front.

Hey I'm glad your problem was resolved! I was hoping someone would be able to revive this subject and help with my clunk!
I have a 97 tacoma with 2" lift in front billi 5100 with ome coils. Junkyard build leaf pack and bilstein 5150 10" in the rear. I thought the clunking was from the front, you can feel it in the floor, so I rebuilt the ifs. Poly bushings on uca and lca. New bolts and new alignment. New upper and lower ball joints. The rack was popping and loose so I replaced the old glide bearing with the new bushing. Now there is no vertical play in the rack.
I also replaced the carrier bearing because I thought it was clunking!
Everything seems tight, ubolts, struts, shackles. And I have removed my sway bar.
The only iffy thing is my left shock has 2 not 3 top plate bolts holding it in, one sheered off.
The clunk comes when going over bumps, turning on flat ground, any kind of body roll leads to a clunk! And weirdly only when it is wet! Dry weather makes it go away...
    Please help thanks guys
