High Idle

Hey guys, names Lee and I just purchased a '99 taco xcab 4wd for $1200. The one problem on this truck that bothers me the most is the high idle.. parked at a stop sign I idle near 3000 RPM. The truck had an extra TPS in the cab when I bought it and put it on thinking this would solve the problem, but didn't. I know the spring on the throttle linkage where the throttle cable is connected to the throttle body (the outside spring not the inside one) is very loose and probably needs replacing.

Can anyone help me diagnose my problem? and also where is the best place to get engine parts like this spring or TPS?

Holy crap only 1200, that's incredible.

I unfortunatly can't offer any advice but 3000 rpm is alot more than a high idle. you could coast at 70 and not even touch the gas. jk i know it would go down pushing the truck.

 

Yea I caught a steal on the truck no doubt. Its not in mint condition by any means but it has potential. Something I noticed this morning driving to work the engine started surging going from 3k to <1k RPM. It only did this when I was not on the throttle, and then the airbag light came on. Is this a symptom of computer problems?

 

Got to browsing the forums a little, and got to wondering: the truck has 240k miles on it, the next oil change was due at 219k and never got done, so the maintenance on this truck was shoddy at best. I have replaced the alternator and all 3 belts, but what about timing belt? I know I should replace this, being it probably has never been replaced, is this complicated? I have replaced it on my jeep before but never in another vehicle I have owned. Not saying it is causing my problems but preventative maintenance.

 

Yea, that what I was reading.. Looks like I know where the Yota will be parked the next few days!!!

Where is the best parts website to get "dealer only" parts. Called Napa for that spring, and they only showed a gasket for the throttle body in their computer. Everyone tells me these are dealer parts.

 

If it's surging like crazy, start looking for a vacuum leak. The idle air control motor can usually only control the idle up to about 2000-2400 rpm.
