Toyota has built a reputation on being reliable for the long haul. We've all bought into this due to previous experience/ hearing from others with this experience. While the truck is not under warranty, Toyota should at least help with covering some of the repair expenses as it is clearly a common problem. Should they pay all of it, maybe, maybe not. Bitching an moaning to us about it wont get you anywhere and will only serve to piss off the community you are trying to get assistance from.

Call toyota and see what they will do for you. Personally if it were my vehicle, I'd be pretty upset that an 8 year old truck has such a common major failure as I have had a 94 toyota pickup with well over 200k on it and it was still running like a top when I sold it for 5k in 2010. I currently have a 180k mile 89 nissan pathfinder that also runs perfect considering its 25 years old. Build quality is clearly not what it used to be from any manufacturer, but they should still take care of their customers with at least a little assistance towards these repairs

I'm not bitching, I'm eloquently speaking my mind, and expressing my the 1st amendment rights. I appreciate all of you that support me with this issue, and openly accept criticism at the same time. Just remember one thing, were all in this sinking boat together.

How common is it? I have a 2007 w/ 150K miles and no issues.

I am not sinking. With you / without you, I'm not sinking. If my truck has a problem I'll cowboy up and get it fixed.

Why do you feel Toyota owes you something?

I hate to have to tell you this, but Toyota trucks break. Manufactured equipment fails. Yes, Toyota has a (well deserved) reputation for reliability - that doesn't mean their trucks don't break (even when they aren't abused). It simply means that it is less likely than other vehicles.

The failure rate for everything Toyota makes is 100% given a long enough period of time. The failure rate will generally fall into a bell shaped curve w/ the majority failing around the expected lifespan for that part. Some will fail earlier than expected. Some will last longer than expected. For the failure rates before the expected life span Toyota provides a limited warranty and the terms are agreed to by both parties.

You purchased the vehicle. The warranty coverage for said vehicle was known at the time (whether it was purchased new w/ extended warranty or used w/ no warranty). At the time of purchase, it made sense to you and you agreed to terms. Now you are one of the statistics - your truck experienced a failure (that you believe is premature) and you feel cheated. Exactly how long do you think Toyota should cover you? 200K miles? 20yrs or 400K miles? What's the number?

How long do you think you should be able to drive a motor with no repairs? You realize in the not to distant past, replacing timing chains/belts every 100K miles was just expected right? If you got longer you were lucky, interference design motors you were playing Russian roulette to drive past 100K.

The owners of these trucks that get higher than expected service life, say 400K miles over 20 yrs (make up your own numbers if you don't like mine), should they be expected to send Toyota a check because their truck lasted beyond the expected life of the vehicle? After all, they got more than they paid for, more than they expected - should they have to send Toyota a check?

If not, then why do you expect it to only work one way? How do you expect Toyota to remain profitable if they cover every vehicle they make for as long as the current owner of the vehicle feels is reasonable? You do understand that Toyota's primary responsibility is to provide a profit to its share holders right? It's not a charity.

Your truck is outside of the warranty. It is your responsibility to pay for the repairs. If you think the reliability was sub par and that represents Toyota's quality in general, then don't buy another Toyota. That's what I did after I owned my one and only Dodge.

SWEET! I did the same with my old taco. Had a/c problems so I just filled just before going down so the a/c would work for about 24 hours then it was their problem. hahahahaha

    Edit:
You didn't by chance use synthetic with that that last oil change? I have heard it is not good to just start up with synthetic on an older engine. You can end up with leaks because the oil is more easily capable of getting through older seals and gaskets. (not sure if really true?)

I agree with normal maintenance and failures like a timing chain etc. Normal wear and tear is not something that should be covered by a dealer. But an oil leak that is a "Common" problem on nearly all 4.0 engines, that they are aware of, and didn't send out letters to consumers informing them of this problem? That is a manufacturing defect Toyota overlooked, not simple wear and tear. There are users that have had the oil leak at 20k - 400k miles. It is a very gray area, and like I've said before, I love toyota, but this one just seems shady.

just to clarify since there seems to be some confusion

    bitching

Repeatedly saying something over and over, or rather whining about it, therefore destroying the point you were trying to make and making you look like a complete bitch because no one is listening to you.

You are both bitching and whining when you have all but a few of your huge post count about a oil leak. Dont drown in your tears.

No oil leak with your future electric tacoma. Just do it already or do you want toyota to do that for you as well???

No on the synthetic regular old dino oil.

Yes it sucks that the truck got an oil leak but such is life I never even replaced a ball joint in the truck and I live 3/4 mile in on a pot hole filled road and frequently drive gravel roads up north. I also drove the truck with around 100k on the odie for 10k miles with a trailer attached for 33 days with dino oil and I never burned or lost a drop.

If you want to complain about manufacturing defects google " transfer case rub " and " cracked heads " you'll see GM screwed thousands of people with the Silverado's ( I was one of them ) and don't get me started about the very same truck starting to show rot in 5 yrs. I'll take the oil leak in the Tacoma after 150k miles, hence Toyota getting my business again.

Imagine if they made an electric Tacoma, with a Diesel generator. Like the Chevy Volt, but better, because it would be Toyota. I read that you could get like 100mpg with that setup.
