    Good Evening Guys...Newbie Here

I need to draw from your experience and expertise. I had the opportunity to acquire a 2000 Tacoma X-Cab 2 Wheel 4 Cyl. This truck was owned by a friend of my son-in-law, middle aged gentlemen who is known to be anal about maintenance. The truck has 231K but looks like it has 31K...when I say pristine, I mean 9.9 out of 10.

My concern is as follows. The truck comes from Florida, my home State, and will now live in TN. Obvious climate differences... He has always used 10W-40 non-synthetic....always changed before 3K. I have only used synthetic in all of my vehicles for the last 30 years...along with my all my tractors. The vehicle, according to him, and I have no reason to doubt his honesty, never consumed any oil and I cannot find any any leaks anywhere on this truck. I cannot overstress how immaculate this truck is.

I want to switch to synthetic... factory recommended viscosity, which I believe to be 5W-30....will I be looking at potential issues switching to a much thinner viscosity given the mileage? It is now in a much colder climate which I know requires a thinner viscosity for obvious reasons....I just don't want to open a can of worms.

Any feed back would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You in advance for your time and experience
    Maureen

    Pretty much stock right now
If there are no leaks and nominal oil consumption, why not? My 01 has the same mileage, and there is no detectable oil consumption between changes. Usually, higher mileage vehicles consume oil, make it expensive to run synthetic. I would stick to the viscosity specified by Toyota.

I switched to 0w30 synthetic on my truck with ~270k. There's not really a good reason to not switch.
