I can agree with your mpg statement - the 2.7 should get higher mpgs than it does, but not the rest. I've owned 4 2.7/auto tacos and never felt any of them were (or are) slow. Demand for used tacos is too fickle to reach that conclusion. My findings when purchasing mine were actually just the opposite; the 2.7/auto combo cost more. I think the biggest factor in the used market is the price, then engine/trans.

That said, I'd like to see you get 12k for the 04. But I do have to add that an 04 I was recently following on eBay went for 9k. That hurt, particularly because I paid 10,500 for my 03 in April.

I test drove a 02 4x4 auto 2.7 when I first started looking. It had 113k on it and was in great condition. The guy was asking $7500. When I test drove it, I thought I was going to die trying to merge onto i95. Seems like your content with the acceleration, but not me. I had to convince myself to make an offer and I negotiated to $5000, but the 2.7 with the auto killed it for me and I passed. If it was 5 speed I would of bought it in a second and I even would of gladly paid $7500 if he was firm.

Maybe to an unexpected buyer the 2.7/auto combo will bring more. But, most people seeking out a 1st gen at the moment know at least something about them. The 2.7 w/auto is well known to be slower and less desirable then the manual.
Maybe there was a couple high priced 2.7 w/auto tacomas around you that were overpriced, but in general, the 2.7 w/manual is more desired. More desire = more money.

The I4 with an auto tranny is harder to find and for a period, Toyota didn't offer that configuration (resumed a couple years back). The truck has adequate acceleration but by no means will you take it racing. Relative to a stick I do not see a significant difference except for FE where gliding in neutral would improve MPGs. And compared to the 3.4 I didn't see enough of a distinction in performance to warrant it over the I4 (I prefer better FE than power). We needed the auto as the wife can't drive a manual tranny.

Still, the I4s were being sought by folks back then because of the price of gas. Clearly though folks looking for the I4s are those with light duty demands. Mine hauls wood just fine but I don't tow anything. If i did I might have opted for the V6. If I were to sell my truck now, I'd do the research relative to current market conditions and availability. Not hard to set a price. Harder to hold the price if one is in a hurry to sell.

Wow guys, I didn't even know so many people replied to my thread. Thank you. Everyone has good numbers on here and I like it.

Like everyone said, I have the 2.7 auto but have the 2:45 or whatever gears. Idk the number but I have heard its rare to find one with my gears on it. I love the power and think its fast but I wanna get a really cheap suv. Something old that a fixer upper so I dont have a loan. I'm trying to save money so I gotta do what I gotta do.

Im thinking I should put it up on cl at 13.5k and lowest all go is 11 maybe 10. Even if I was stupid and took 10k, I would still be making 3k on it to buy a cheap suv. So I think I'm making out. Plus I put new tires on it and it has the new frame and new factory suspension on it so I should be good selling it like that.

One think, do you think I would have a problem selling it if I have a loan on it. They would give me the check, I would go to my bank and give the bank the money and then give them the title when I have it right? Shouldn't be a problem.

Thanks again for the help guys. Your the best. I hope to make 11k on it. That would be nice. I just have to clean it up and make it look nice and I'm all set.

Thanks snoope. Good idea but I owe money on the truck so that wouldnt work. I owe like 6 on it so I just wanna sell it and buy a cheap 97 or 98 suv and fix it and have no loan. Better that way.

Yes I was thinking selling for 11k. I might do that.
Good idea mike. Around 11 or 12 is what I wanna make on it. I'll be a happy camper if I do

I'd try to hold out for 12 if it was me. You've got low mileage for the year and the major issue has been resolved by being re-framed.

True you have a point. It is like 12 grand to replace the frame and all of that labor so it's a good selling point. I do have some scratches and couple some dings on the paint so I hope that doesn't hurt it that much in price. I'm gonna get some factory color match paint and paint the dings so there not noticeable much. Wanna make it looking clean so I get more money on it. I love how these tucks have good resale value

Try posting it for 14k-15k. My buddy bought the same year/truck as yours and he paid 13k. Don't try posting on here because i'm sure no one will pay what you want. Try craigslist, it'll sell within a week garantueed

Hi there, new to the Tacoma world, but not new to buying and selling cars, or CL, at all.

I've read every single reply on this thread, and I'm extremely surprised with the responses.
No offence, but..they ain't made of gold. They are fantastic trucks indeed, but some of you guys are saying like 15k, as in...$15,000??? $15,000 is a LOT of money for a 10year old compact pick-up. It's the less powerful 2.7l with the autotragic. I agree 100% that the 5speed manual, mated to any motor, is far more desirable. In any, and every application.

I've looked long and hard for Tacomas, and pickups in general. If it has an auto, I skip over it without a 2nd thought. $15,000 is through-the-roof outrageous. Similar trucks like this list for $6000-9000 on CL and hang around for a couple months.
But I do 100% agree that it is very appealing that your truck has a brand new frame.

For the same money, you could have MUCH more truck. The KBB on this is ~$11000 at best, and I believe KBB is very inflated.

Just to give you solid ideas, not like "yeah, you'll get $12k, I gaurentee it". Here are some local [to me] examples. I live in Wash. D.C., so I understand things might be different.

http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/mld/cto/4230560987.html 1998 Ext. cab, 4x4, 5 speed, pretty sure it's 4cyl. Just at 100k miles. A bit older than yours, but asking $6100.

http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/nva/cto/4239641968.html 2004, ext. cab, 4x4, 5 speed, 96k miles. Asking $9000. Slightly higher mileage than yours.

    http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/mld/cto/4230491896.html 2001, ext. cab. 4cyl, automatic. 106k miles. Pretty sure it's 4x4. Asking $7900.

I've been watching CL regularly, and these have all been up for sale on the market for at least 3 weeks.
Not trying to be a jerk, just trying to bring you back to reality a little bit. Seems like your eyes keep floating higher and higher. "hope I can get 9k or 10k. Yeah. 11k sounds good. You're right, I think I'll ask 14k. You really think I can get 15??? Yeah, me too."

    Good post.

Also, not everyone is going to be walking around with $10-$15K in cash - just try calling your financial institution and asking for a $15K loan for a 10+ year old truck with 100K+ miles on it and see what they say.

I can definitely see this truck getting 10k. He is in MA and has a new frame, so there are buyers out there, but no way can I see even 13k. For that kind of money, I would hold out for a newer 2nd gen. My buddy bought a 06 4x4 with 50k almost two years ago for $16k.

    Yes, nailed that aspect, too.
The people who not only have $15k cash, but can live without that $15k cash, aren't interested in spending it on a 10 year old truck that's pushing 100k. Those are the people who traded their 10y/o Tacomas in 5 years ago.

Someone who has $15k just to slap down on a truck, they are looking to buy a F250 4x4 turbodiesel with 100k, or put a significant down payment on a new truck.

Why would you pay $15k for this truck, when, for a little more money, you can get a brand new Tacoma. With a warranty, and zero miles.
Tacomas start at $17k? $18k? And to get this model, ext. cab, 4x4, auto costs like $25k?

Not bashing your truck OP. Looks gorgeous. I love, love, love how these Tacomas look, but let's be realistic about what it's worth. $15,000 cash doesn't float around willy-nilly.

No doubt there. I've tried to sell stuff in the past by putting it "on the money" but people gotta negotiate. I think in Boston it's called "dickerin"
