no reverse

hello i am new here. I am currently having trouble w my reverse i have an 2003 toyota tacoma 4x4 and when i put it in reverse it acts like its in neutral i never had problem w my reverse before till now. Any ideas on what it may b would be helpfull because i have no idea

shade tree mechanic drained fluid everything looked good no shavings or anything like that

 

he also said the only thing to do was to replace transmission but i find that hard to believe when every other gear works fine

have you tried reverse in 4x4 and 4 low ?

you jumped into the truck and it had no reverse or you were driving for a while and lost reverse ?

thinking about a broken weld on the lower planet carrier

 

after trying to back up a hill i put it in reverse again and acted as if i was in neutral and still does and reverse doesnt work in4x4 either

 

i dont think i have low gear if i rember correctly it is hard to get the gear shifter into low may not even go in low at all
