well I am going to be buying new wheels and tires. However the decision of tires is annoying. I was looking originally at bfg all terrain 285 70 17. I was warned that they are a little wide, and worse gas mileage and I should look at 275 70 17. also in reading they are loud on pavement and that would bug me. I like the look of a meaty tire. but dont know about running mud terrain tires in the snow.
    my requirements
    looks good.
    good wear.
    not to loud.
I go to the snow and off road occasionally but mostly on road driving.

and what are the pros of running a 285 vs a 275 or 265 size tire?

Prob ltx's OP, you just can't have both a big aggressive tire and mpg, it's more then the overall size that effects the mpg. My understanding of tire sizes are the 1st # is the width in mm, 2nd # is percentage of 1st #, and ofcourse last is rim dia. So...
285/70-17 will be 10mm wider then a 275 but also a percentage ration larger in overall dia. also. I think stock is just over a 31 and a 285/70 is just shy of a 33, I always use maitatirecalculater to see the differences.

noting wrong with the All Terrains. I had 2 sets of them on my old truck... not loud at all and great in the snow. I think I will be getting the Goodyear Duratracs for my taco soon.

I run 255x75x17 on Tacoma which works out 32x10x17 with a 3" lift the only problem is BFGoodrich Mud Terrain KM1 lots of road noise are very load at hwy speed. A better choice is Toyo Open Country M/T excellent tires even on hwy I uses them on my Jeep looks good and quiet.

If you don't like tire hum then don't even consider mud terrains. An all around tire for good daily driving and some rough terrain is an all-terrain tire. BFG AT do come in 275/70/17 which is a nice compromise size. It'd a little smaller, a little lighter, but still looks great with a lift.

I have Goodyear Wrangler MT/R with Kevlar. Awesome do anything tire, not too loud, looks sweet, and stops bullets, I think at least.

I got Cooper Discoverer ATP tires on my dads 4runner and they are very quiet and are great on and off road. They look nice too.

Or, you could go with the Mickey Thompson MTZ's i have on my Tacoma. Their 285/70R17's but they are one heavy tire and your MPG's will drop greatly. But, they do last along time, 65,000 on my first set, and they handle any terrain and are not that load on the road either. I guess it's all personal preference ;)
