    Howdy im TripleThreat,
I made this thread because I not only do alot of my maintenance myself and I also have come across problems that would cause anyone lots of money for a simple fix. This has become clear and I would like to share my experiences of what I have had to fix on my tacoma. Also I have heavily modified my tacoma from stock so there are alot of issues people will have with the dealership and just generally keeping it running.
    Enjoy

P0158 / P0607 Check Engine and Trac Off

Howdy Tacoma World here was this months issue, so a little back ground on my truck I have installed doug thorleys, I changed out the stock y pipe with a custom exhaust, Oh and a scanguage II is on my truck as well. I was actually pushing my truck hard through the RPMs and all of a sudden my my engine light came on with my trac off light. I reset the computer with no results. I got the code read and if you don't have a code reader auto zone will read it for you for free.
The codes are P0158 and P0607 they indicate that the 02 Sensor (H02S22) circuit had high voltage.
    P0158
    -Open or short circuit
    -poor electrical connection
    -engine mechanical fault
    -EFI relay fault
    -Faulty H02s22 (bank 2 sensor)

    2013-12-21_09-01-24_40_zps3beb175a_d69d0c2e95d94f183ca74c1781b36e776eb2ce99.jpg

    P0607
    -Control module performance
    -cruise control
    -brake switch fault
    -open or short circuit condition

    2013-12-21_09-01-36_389_zpsd5211e37_37954c32c9ea6cab3f5b00e6ffd237b7e28c9d88.jpg

Now if you get these codes I have seen these before when I first installed my doug thorleys and had to install 02 simulators the same code will appear. Now since its been a year since I installed the doug thorelys I thought the 02 sensors would be bad. Gadget from URD indicates its normal for 02 sensors to go bad after an install.
The beggining: So I went to the dealership to get two 02 sensors. As well as fix my tire pressure gauge as I had damaged one. Heres where things get out of hand the dealership says they can't cover the work since I have modified the truck. Further more they read the codes and the technician which is not a mechanic since all he this guy does is read codes and fix a truck that way says that part of the main ECU is "fried due to my exhaust" they state the flow is abnormal and the ECU can't handle it. They price for this fix is 1,600 plus tax. I said hell no the truck is fine so the problems I had on the truck when it went in included:
    - P0158 / P0607 02 Sensor codes which set off trac off and engine code
    - Tire pressure gauge got hit through the tire

Dealership over did it: I only wanted the tire pressure gauge fixed and 02 sensor ordered. They read the codes and told me there are major isssues after hearing the ECU being bad I was surprised to say the least. Heres the best part... The dealership says the ECU has been modified I reply with hell no and we get into what the service manager kept calling a "debate" but he was clearly arguing with me. I stated the ECU has never been touched and the only one that has touched it was the dealership itself to get re-flashed. Then it gets ridiculous!
Scangauge OBII Super computer? If you have a Scangauge II then you might want to TAKE IT OFF your truck or prepare to "debate" because they think that the devices that connect to the OBII port ARE ECU UPGRADES!!! this is MADNESS! (not sparta) I was slight disturbed. Furthermore the service director says the exhaust work and doug thorleys allowing no cats provide to much flow which the 02 sensor can't handle which fried the exhaust portion of the ECU. He further more states that the ECU has been remapping/re-tuning to the heavy flow till it burnt out. While it an excellent theory it not the case which I will explain later.
Note: I have been to other dealerships and they don't seem to mind the Scangauge or other readers as long as you take them out of the OBII port but it was still new to me to hear that its a ECU upgrade! HAHA
Warranty: One thing I will always stand my ground on is if you get a lift on your truck or any other work unless they can prove it was your modification that broke that part the company and dealership have to honor their warranty. Get a lawyer if you need to because I didn't pay anything because we are right when we ask them to honor the warranty.
    2013-12-21_09-02-07_809_zpsaca1809a_d3ea29d3bceb887c2ff064b9135a5037166d40ea.jpg

The solution: So if you think the ECU needed to be changed this is not the case. Once you replace the 02 sensors you just need the code reset and everything is fixed! The 02 sensor code "P0158' sets off the "limp mode" so your traction control, cruise control, etc... will shutdown. But change out the 02 sensors get the code overridden and your in the clear. Why is this the case? Well the code "P0158" sets off a false reading that the ECU is fried but its actually fine its just the way the code is read. If you look online plenty of tacomas have had this code and changed out the whole ECU! out of there pocket in some cases. But these codes create a false reading and dealerships have read it and changed out perfectly good ECUs I couldn't believe all the forums I have read.

The Damage: I will not name the dealership because I was very polite and while we had some stern issues I am not trying to ruin their reputation. Furthermore I called everyday since they could'nt get me an update everyday I had to call once everyday. One of my biggest complaints is the truck did not get any work done on it over the tire pressure gauge and a secondary issue of a lose metal bracket in my passenger door on Tuesday and Sunday. Why is this? Well because the maintenance team was off those days and if their going to be off those days why not have another team work on it? because I did not have a truck for 6 days due to this madness.
Totals days in the shop: 5 days
Total bill: zero dollars, bucks, monies, (euros?)
Total damage to the truck after repairs: Zero (all good under the hood)

Well I was able to get a couple months by telling the dealership to clear the code and it didnt come back for awhile. If you have O2 simulators and no cat the flow can break the rear 02 sensors. Gadget from URD told me they burn out and its normal from a long tubes and a URD y pipe for the O2 sensors to go. But get the dealership to clear the code and see if it come back. Then buy the 02 sensors if all else fails and you will be in the clear. They aint cheap though and the front ones are more expensive! Also toyota uses two diffrent 02 sensors in the rear one for the passenger side and a diffrent one for the driver side, they are not the same.

Just a bit of advice. Invest in a 12 dollar bluetooth elm327 obd2 scanner and download the torque app so you don't have to get the dealership to clear codes for you. I have had mine for about 7 months and it works flawless.

Typically the "collateral damage" from dealership visits are not under the hood, but on the body panels.

This is true but last time I suffered a dent on my tail gate and I have the dashcam video of the guy saying crap after parking it then the manager got involved and I got a dent free scratch free tailgate :D

Ohh ok yeah I have a scanner and I've been keeping up on the codes . I was originally getting p0607 and p0158 but now it's
P0138 & p0158 . Meaning both o2 sensors are out so I'll have to but them and install them . How's it been since they've been replaced ? No codes ?

Whats going on man, I just got back from Florida I was in school for six months!!! My Trac Off and check engine light just came on and you and I have the same set up or close to the same set up. So would you say that I need two new O2 sensors? Have you modified your Valve body on your Transmission yet? I am thinking about doing this next to give the tranny some longevity, IPT offers a modified Valve body for 680.00.

    Thanks

    Mario

You need to get your ECU code cleared but if that does'nt work then you will need two different kinds of O2 sensors they are different if you need them I have them for you but I would try and clear the code first cause the sensors aint cheap.

If "excessive flow" is an issue with your O2 sensors, you can try using an anti-fouler.
I am running DTLT headers with the original O2 sensors and simulators.

cleared the codes and it was short lived, they came back a day later when I drove up to laguna beach.

So I have dtlt and pipebomb with o2 sim. I only get p0607 with cold start. Only got p0158 with p0607 once. So from what I'm reading my rear o2s are going? If so what is the best brand to buy?

I have. 2013 V6 manual Supercharged with DTLT with cats in the Y pipe. Also a URD MAF simulator and O2 simulator. With about 55,000 miles on the pickup. I randomly get both a P0420 and P0430 code that I can clear with an ultra gauge. These codes usually don't come right back. They are thrown once a week sometimes only once a month. Sometimes just the 420 sometimes just the 430. Today On the way to work I hit a big puddle, bigger then I thought it was and I averaged about 70 MPH with some passing at about 85 MPH. I did throw a po430 code 5-10 mins after the puddle but no other issues for another 40 miles. I parked at work, went back to my pick up 30 minutes later and got a p0158 and p0607 code. My ultra gauge cleared the codes and they pop right back up sometimes just the p0607 code. Are my O2's gone? I having disconnected the O2 connectors to in stall the simulators I wouldn't assume the puddle with water infiltration would be the issue. And maybe my O2's finally really gave up. Any advice, that's a lot of O2 oriented codes is a short time frame.
